4 Positions Barcelona Need to Strengthen & the Players They Should Sign to Fix Them – Summer 2020

It seemed as if the Barcelona board thought that getting rid of Ernesto Valverde as manager was going to fix everything wrong with the club… at least, wasn’t it meant to?

The arrival of Quique Setién as his successor hasn’t quite brought an end to the Blaugrana’s issues, with the team seemingly still reliant on individual brilliance from Lionel Messi to just about snatch victories since his appointment.

And as for their off-field problems, the emergency signing of Martin Braithwaite from Leganés really wasn’t ideal. It remains to be seen if signing the Dane will work out for the club; but then again, the Spanish champions shouldn’t need to use a long-forgotten about clause to find a striker. The turmoil within their boardroom doesn’t bode well either for the Catalans, who currently look in disarray and need to resolve all of their issues as quickly as possible.

With that all being said, they’re still currently leading La Liga ahead of Real Madrid. But if they can address the various deficiencies in their squad this summer, then they can ensure the Spanish top-flight crown can remain theirs for the long-term, as well as pushing for a sixth Champions League title.

So, here are four crucial positions in which Barça need to strengthen in the summer window, along with who they should target for each role.

Right-Back

Nelson Semedo

It’s fair to say that the Blaugrana have not successfully replaced Dani Alves at right-back since he departed in 2016.

While Sergi Roberto has filled out the right-back spot admirably, he’s a much better fit in a central midfield role. And as for Nélson Semedo, he’s had his moments, but there’s certainly been too many times where he’s been caught out of position by opponents.

Whoever comes in will need to be comfortable in possession, as well as being able to track back – just after they’ve provided an overlap to the forward in front of them.

Suggested Options:

FBL-ENG-PR-LEICESTER-ASTON VILLA

Ricardo Pereira has been excellent for Leicester since he joined from Porto, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Catalans chose to replace Semedo with his countryman.

It would be unlikely for Manchester City to give up on João Cancelo after just one year, but then again Inter and Juventus both did, so a move to Barça wouldn’t be a complete surprise.

Of course, the club could pay €9m to bring over Emerson, a player that they share ownership over with Real Betis. He’s contracted there until 2021, with the Catalans having an option to buy him then, yet his form could persuade the club to bring him over to Camp Nou a year earlier than planned.

Centre-Back

Gerard Pique

With there being only three senior centre-backs currently on the Blaugrana’s books, buying another one should be seen as a key priority.

Gerard Piqué has been a magnificent servant for the club, but is now 33 and may not be able to maintain his high standards for long. And while Clément Lenglet’s position looks secure in the backline, the same can’t be said for Samuel Umtiti, with his departure looking likely at the moment.

The on-loan Jean-Clair Todibo has looked good for Schalke 04 since joining in January, but is probably a year away from being considered for the first team, and needs another year of development. The German side will probably trigger his option to buy if he’s that good anyway.

It looks like Barça will have to splash out on another centre-back, given that they’ll need to replace the outgoing Umtiti, as well as the ageing Piqué.

Suggested Options:

SSC Napoli v KRC Genk: Group E - UEFA Champions League

The best current centre-back the Catalans could go out and sign would be Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, who looks likely to depart Gli Azzurri sooner rather than later.

Another of Serie A’s top defenders, Alessio Romagnoli could be on the move in the summer, and would be a strong presence at the back for the Blaugrana, who were recently linked with the 25-year-old.

If looking for a long-term stalwart, Dayot Upamecano has been impressive for RB Leipzig this season and would fit in well with Setién’s possession-style football.

And closer to home, there’s also Diego Carlos to consider, with the Sevilla centre-back playing a key part of Los Nervionenses’ push for Champions League football this season.

Central Midfield

Frenkie De Jong

Much like many of his predecessors, Setién likes to play with a midfield trio, tasked with keeping possession while being mobile enough to move all over the pitch.

And while Arthur, Frenkie de Jong and Sergio Busquets all look to be part of the manager’s plans going forward, the ageing duo of Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitić will likely be parting ways with the Blaugrana this summer. The club seem keen to bid farewell to them, along with the on-loan Philippe Coutinho, in order to find new recruits.

Of the current youngsters, Oriol Busquets is the most likely to make the first-team, but needs more time to develop further beforehand.

The Spanish champions will need to find players who are comfortable with the ball, while also being able to make supporting runs to help both the attack and defence.

Suggested Options:

Fabian Ruiz

The Blaugrana have been linked with Fabián Ruiz and could tempt him into coming home from Napoli. He would be a great technical fit at Camp Nou and is versatile enough to play in either an advanced or withdrawn role.

With José Mourinho clearly not his biggest fan, maybe Barça could take Tanguy Ndombele off Spurs’ hands? The Frenchman would add a physical edge to their midfield stocks that they don’t have.

And while it’s widely assumed N’Golo Kanté will probably head off to Los Blancos from Chelsea, it would be an audacious move if the Catalans hijacked the move and bought him instead.

Forward

Lionel Messi,Luis Suarez

It turns out that having Messi isn’t enough to win trophies every season.

The primary targets that Barça seem to be focusing on, is to bring in a third star goal-scorer to help out the Argentine and Suárez. While Antoine Griezmann has been fine for them, his future still doesn’t seem that secure at Camp Nou. Meanwhile, Ousmane Dembélé looks to be on the way out, and who even knows what Braithwaite will produce for the Blaugrana.

The club hierarchy seems determined to add a big-name forward this summer who can gel with the aforementioned South American duo and can score a shed-load of goals.

Suggested Options:

Lautaro Martinez

The name that’s been heavily linked to Barça is Lautaro Martínez, and to his credit, he easily has the quality to come in and prove to be a key player from the off.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a normal window for the Blaugrana if they weren’t linked with Neymar. The PSG man came close to rejoining his former team last summer, and given his strong friendships with many at Camp Nou, it looks likely that the Spanish champions will try again to bring over the Brazilian once again.

With the two South American targets likely to cost eye-watering fees each, it leaves very little left for any other attacking targets. Yet if moves for either were to break down, Barça could look to sign Valencia starlet Ferran Torres or in-demand striker Timo Werner from RB Leipzig as alternative options.

Liverpool Confirm Sir Kenny Dalglish Tests Positive for Coronavirus

Liverpool have confirmed that club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has tested positive for coronavirus, though he is currently asymptomatic.

Dalglish travelled to hospital on Wednesday for treatment on an unrelated infection, but was tested for the virus as part of hospital guidelines.

Liverpool took to their official website to confirm the diagnosis, noting that Dalglish has displayed no symptoms.

Sir Kenny was admitted to hospital on Wednesday April 8 for treatment of an infection which required intravenous antibiotics,” a statement read.

“In keeping with current procedures, he was subsequently tested for COVID-19 despite having previously displayed no symptoms of the illness. Unexpectedly, the test result was positive but he remains asymptomatic.

Prior to his admission to hospital, Sir Kenny had chosen to voluntarily self-isolate for longer than the advised period together with his family. He would urge everyone to follow the relevant government and expert guidance in the days and weeks ahead.

“He would like to take this opportunity to thank the brilliant NHS staff, whose dedication, bravery and sacrifice should be the focus of the nation’s attention at this extraordinary time.

“He would also ask that they are given the space to do their jobs during what is an extremely challenging time for them and that his own family’s privacy is respected. He looks forward to being home soon. We will provide further updates as and when it is appropriate.”

Sammy Lee,Kenny Dalglish

After moving to Liverpool in 1977, Dalglish racked up 141 goals in 449 appearances for the club, many of which came alongside Ian Rush. The pair combined to lead Liverpool to four First Division titles, with Dalglish having already won the competition twice before Rush’s arrival.

He took over as player-manager in 1985, before focusing exclusively on management five years later, having led the Reds to another two league titles, and his efforts were immortalised in 2017 when Liverpool named a stand at Anfield after him.

The Top 5 Pieces of USWNT PA Apparel Available Right Now

The USWNT are, by an absolute mile, the biggest women’s football team on the planet. They’re one of the most passionately supported national teams on the planet, regardless of gender.

There are, of course, some things that come with that. There are some pressures on the players, sure, but it’s dreamland for fans. You get some brilliant merch designs, readily available…and since getting the license for the USWNT Players Association ahead of World Cup 2019, BreakingT have made some absolute crackers. These are their most popular…

5. Christen Press, What Have You Done?

Alex Morgan might’ve got the heat from their media for her tea-drinking celebration at the World Cup, but it’s Christen Press who’s been the real thorn in England’s side over the last year or two.

She scored the first goal in that World Cup semi-final, and scored an absolute peach of a curling shot from outside the box in 2020’s SheBelieves Cup – ESPN’s Sebastian Salazar shouting on commentary, “Christen Press, what have you done?!”

4. Pay The Women

A simple message. A simple shirt. The USWNT have been locked in a bitter pay dispute with US Soccer for some time now, to the point that the crowd at the 2019 World Cup final were chanting ‘equal pay’ after the full time whistle.

2. Rapinoe Bird 2020

Speaking of the USWNT’s icon…Pinoe’s relationship with WNBA star Sue Bird has been described as ‘couple goals’ but, with last summer’s ‘f—ing White House’ storm and Bird’s follow-up post on The Players’ Tribune titled ‘So the President F*cking Hates My Girlfriend’, there’s been some (semi-serious) clamour for a political run.

Can’t be worse than Biden/TBA 2020, can it?

1. 4 Stars Only

A design brilliant in its simplicity, and its message. Just two days before the USWNT’s SheBelieves Cup match against Japan, it was revealed that US Soccer had argued that women’s players were inherently less skilled and able than men’s players, in an attempt to justify the pay gap between the two teams.

90min readers can buy the 4 Stars Only shirt for $28 with free shipping using the code 90MINSHIPFREE!

That went down like a lead balloon – and the team went out for the pregame warmup with their shirts inside out in protest, showing only the outline of the four stars; one per World Cup won.

Chelsea Transfers: 6 Left-Backs the Blues Could Realistically Target This Summer

Left-back has been a troublesome position for Chelsea for years. Ever since Ashley Cole’s decline, the Blues have struggled to get it right.

This season, things have been really rough for Frank Lampard, who has benched both Emerson and Marcos Alonso in favour of playing César Azpilicueta out of position, and the most concerning thing is that pretty much every fan agrees with that decision – Chelsea’s left-backs are not good enough.

There’s talk that both Alonso and Emerson could be on their way out this summer, so at least one new arrival is likely, and here are six potential candidates to fill the void.

Ben Chilwell (Leicester City)

Ben Chilwell

In an ideal world, Chelsea would splash out on Ben Chilwell this summer. Unfortunately, we’re not living in an ideal world, and there are a few stumbling blocks with this one.

The main concern is his price tag. Leicester are in no rush to sell, having tied him down to a six-year contract in 2018. They’re still rolling in the Harry Maguire money and are on track to pick up some hefty prize money from the Premier League, so there has been talk of the Foxes demanding close to £80m to sell Chilwell this summer.

Obviously, shelling out that kind of money isn’t easy, but it’s not impossible. Chelsea still have the money from Eden Hazard’s departure to play with, and if they decide that addressing their need for a left-back is their top priority, then Chilwell’s name will be near the top of the list.

However, that’s not the case. A source has confirmed to 90min that Chelsea are looking to spend big on a centre-back and a striker this summer, with a big-money spend on a left-back looking increasingly unlikely.

If everything else falls apart, a big move to sign Chilwell would work as a spirit-raiser, but there are bigger fish to fry these days.

Alex Telles (Porto)

Alex Telles

For a few years, rumours of a future move to Stamford Bridge for Alex Telles have been slowly growing. The Porto man’s agent told Sport Witness in 2017 that he felt as though Telles was destined to play for Chelsea, and that move could finally come to fruition this summer.

The 27-year-old will enter the final year of his contract this summer and has been rejecting any attempts to extend, and Porto don’t want to lose yet another of their top stars for free. As a result, Telles is expected to be available.

He comes with a release clause of around €40m, but the Blues have been tipped to negotiate a discount because of his contract situation. Either way, he’s probably a lot more affordable than Chilwell.

There are a few concerns about his defensive consistency, but Telles seems like the best option for Chelsea this summer. He’s relatively cheap and is thought to want the move, and anyone who has watched Porto over the last few years will know how exciting he can be.

Marc Cucurella (Getafe)

Marc Cucurella

Spanish youngster Marc Cucurella has long been tipped for greatness, and his loan from Barcelona to Getafe this season has only seen that excitement grow. Getafe are almost certainly going to trigger their option to sign him permanently, but that’s only half the fun.

It’s very possible that they could quickly flip Cucurella for a profit, and Chelsea are one of the sides who have been tipped to try and convince Getafe to do exactly that.

Given the 21-year-old’s relative lack of experience, he would probably be available for closer to the €25m mark, which could prove to be the bargain of the century if Cucurella lives up to his sky-high potential.

However, it could also go the other way. Cucurella is still young and is yet to really play for a top side like Chelsea, so there are doubts over whether he is ready for such a move. It’s a real risk, but the reward could be huge.

Achraf Hakimi (Real Madrid)

Achraf Hakimi

On the search for a new left-back, Chelsea are thought to have turned to Achraf Hakimi, who has spent most of his time during his loan with Borussia Dortmund playing at right-back. However, he is comfortable at left-back as well, so that’s where this link comes from.

The 21-year-old has been excellent during his two years in the Bundesliga, but what the future holds for him is uncertain. Parent club Real Madrid may not want him back, given they still have Dani Carvajal, and a substantial offer might tempt them into selling.

He’s another of those who would probably be a little too expensive, especially when you consider the fact that plenty of other top sides want to bring him in, but selling some of the unwanted squad players (including Alonso and Emerson) could raise enough money for Chelsea.

Hakimi’s versatility would work in his favour – he’s effectively a younger Azpilicueta – but any potential move for him might be a little too hard to pull off.

Blás Riveros (Basel)

Blas Miguel Riveros Galeano

If Chelsea spend big on other targets, there might not be a lot of money left over. The Blues have prepared for that eventuality by monitoring some cheaper options, and one of those is Basel youngster Blás Riveros.

As a 22-year-old with no top-flight experience, making Paraguay international Riveros the answer to Chelsea’s prayers is about as risky as it gets, but it’s another of those with a potentially enormous upside. He is held incredibly highly in both South America and Switzerland and has previously been compared to a young Roberto Carlos.

A number of Europe’s biggest sides have tracked Riveros in the past and it seems like it could be just a matter of time before he earns a big move, and Chelsea have considered being the team to give him that.

He’s obviously not the ideal signing – Chelsea could do with a more-established name to compliment their young core – but Riveros could be an ideal solution if funds are tight.

Matt Targett (Aston Villa)

Matt Targett

Another emergency target, Aston Villa’s Matt Targett has been discussed by scouts at Stamford Bridge as a potential cut-price option this summer.

After a few reliable years with Southampton and Villa, Targett has proven to be able to hold his own in the top flight, and there’s a good chance he could be available this summer if 19th-placed Villa suffer relegation.

Make no mistake about it, he would be nothing more than a quick fix at an affordable price, and Chelsea would likely look to buy another new left-back in 2021 once they have raised the money to do so. He’s not the dream signing, but the Blues could do a whole lot worse than him.

7 Classic Games Newcastle Fans Should Rewatch While Football Takes a Break

There are a wealth of classic games that stand out in Newcastle United’s 127-year history.

The Magpies have been involved in some cracking matches over the years, whether it be from their memorable times in Europe or some famous top flight victories against some of the finest teams in England.

With no live football to currently watch, here is 90min‘s choice of the best classic Newcastle games for Toon Army fans to rewatch.

Newcastle 5-0 Manchester United (1996)

Darren Peacock

Newcastle hosted reigning Premier League champions Manchester United in October 1996, having been beaten to the previous title by four points. The Magpies were desperate for a dose of revenge, and that certainly came through in the final score.

Darren Peacock opened the scoring and the floodgates after 12 minutes, before David Ginola doubled their lead before the break with a stunning long shot. Second half strikes from Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer and Philippe Albert wrapped up the emphatic win, and in some style.

It was Manchester United’s heaviest ever Premier League defeat, and remains their joint worst to this day.

Newcastle 3-2 Barcelona (1997)

Newcastle United FC

Twenty-three years on, Newcastle vs Barcelona in the Champions League seems abnormal to modern day football. But back in 1997, Newcastle welcomed the former European champions to St. James’ Park for a group stage clash.

The Magpies raced into a stunning 3-0 lead thanks to one Colombian striker. Faustino Asprilla first struck from the spot, before two towering headers either side of the break put Newcastle in control. Luis Enrique and Luis Figo’s goals almost levelled it up, but the Toon saw out the win.

Incredibly, neither side made it out of the group, as Ukrainian champions Dynamo Kiev finished top of Group C. Asprilla went on to net 18 goals in 60 appearances for Newcastle, but he will always be remembered for his magical display under the European lights.

Newcastle 2-1 PSV Eindhoven (2004)

Gary Speed

Newcastle often found themselves in the UEFA Cup, and reached the quarter-final stage in 2004. They met Dutch club PSV Eindhoven in the final eight, and having drawn 1-1 in the first leg had the chance to reach the semi-finals on their own turf.

Alan Shearer put the Magpies ahead after just nine minutes, but they were drawn level again by Mateja Kezman and his second goal of the tie. Finally, after two and-a-half hours of nothing between the two, the late Gary Speed headed home the winner and sent Newcastle through to the semi-finals.

Newcastle 4-3 Manchester City (2004)

David James,Robbie Elliott

Back to the Premier League classics, and no Newcastle fan will forget their seven-goal thriller with Manchester City in October 2004. After a goalless first half, Laurent Robert and Shearer put the Toon in front, before City levelled it up thanks to Shaun Wright-Phillips and Robbie Fowler.

Robbie Elliott’s header restored the Magpies’ lead two minutes later, rounding off a crazy four goals in 12 minutes. Wright-Phillips’ second of the afternoon made it 3-3, before an 89th minute winner from Craig Bellamy secured a crazy victory for Newcastle.

If Magpies fans are looking for entertainment, they should look no further than the seven goals in this clash. A remarkable goal-filled second half did the job for Newcastle, though they ended up finishing the 2004/05 season down in 14th.

Newcastle 5-1 Sunderland (2010)

Kevin Nolan

There had to be at least one edition of the Tyne-Wear derby on this list, and what better choice of game than halloween 2010. Newcastle absolutely demolished Sunderland at St. James’ Park, with Kevin Nolan’s hat trick inspiring the Magpies to derby day victory.

A brace from Shola Ameobi well and truly sealed the victory, with the hosts scoring five fantastic goals without reply. Darren Bent’s late consolation was insignificant at the full-time whistle; a huge 5-1 victory over their arch rivals, one that resonates deeply a decade later.

Newcastle 4-4 Arsenal (2011)

Newcastle United's Ivorian midfielder Ch

It’s still constantly talked about nine years later, as one of the greatest modern comebacks in the English game. Arsenal showed that they meant business by racing into a 4-0 lead after 26 minutes, with Theo Walcott, Johan Djourou and Robin van Persie on the scoresheet.

Whatever then manager Alan Pardew said at half-time, it worked wonders even beyond his belief. Joey Barton’s penalty kickstarted the comeback, Leon Best halved the deficit and another Barton spot kick brought the Magpies within a single goal of the Gunners. Surely they couldn’t?

But they could. The ball came out perfectly to the late great Cheick Tiote, who struck the ball sweetly into the back of the net. Newcastle had made it 4-4, sending St. James’ Park into absolute pandemonium. It’s a game all Newcastle fans should rewatch; and all football fans, for that matter.

Chelsea 0-2 Newcastle (2012)

Newcastle United's Papiss Cisse (2nd R)

In the final stages of the 2011/12 season, Chelsea and Newcastle were among those battling it out for the European spots. Their meeting at Stamford Bridge was a crucial one, and one that was settled by the brilliance of one man: Papiss Cisse.

First, Cisse flicked the ball up and, almost without hesitation, pummelled it into the top corner. With the win all but secured in the 94th minute and with Cisse on the sideline far from the goal, he curled it with the outside of his boot into the roof of the net to score an astonishing goal.

That second goal is one of the greatest goals ever scored in Premier League history, and that win was crucial in the Magpies’ season. Newcastle finished one point and one place above Chelsea to qualify for the Europa League, with that night at Stamford Bridge one to remember.
