Juventus Increase Interest in Manchester United Target Raphael Varane as Real Madrid Set Price Tag

Serie A giants Juventus have reportedly been encouraged by the price tag being placed on Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

Los Galacticos are believed to have reached a £100m valuation for the 26-year-old amid interest from a number of European clubs.

The Spanish club is not expected to allow the Frenchman to depart willingly but the rumoured valuation suggests there could be room for negotiation on the matter. The princely sum could also out price some of the competition, including United who are very keen on the player.

Earlier this year United chief executive Ed Woodward reportedly identified Varane as the club’s top summer target. The Red Devils were believed to be preparing a £90m bid for the defender after another disappointing campaign, making them frontrunners for a signature.

According to Calciomercato, United face serious competition from Juventus who’ve been put on red alert following the recent appraisal. The Serie A side are now confident they can stave off interest from United and another unnamed Premier League club to seal a move for Varane.

The Frenchman’s stock has skyrocketed after several impressive years that have seen him rise amongst the best centre backs in the world. Varane won three consecutive Champions League trophies with Real Madrid between 2015 and 2018 before going on to lift the World Cup with France last summer. He was the only player to win both competitions in 2018.

However, Real Madrid have struggled in La Liga and Europe this season, suffering one of the worst campaigns in the history of the club. A major dissection and restructure is expected in summer and the club could be convinced to part with Varane to help fund a makeover.

Manager Zinedine Zidane is reportedly hoping to convince Varane to sign a contract extension though, putting an end to speculation. The Frenchman still has three years to run on his current contract so there is no immediate risk of him leaving for a cutdown price.

Klopp Insists He’s Not Concerned by Manchester City Result as He Focuses on Barcelona Tie

Jurgen Klopp has mirrored Pep Guardiola’s disinterest for his rival’s results, suggesting he is paying no attention to Manchester City’s crucial Burnley fixture this weekend.

The Liverpool boss has instead claimed he is fully focused on his own side’s upcoming Champions League semi-final with Barcelona.

Manchester City’s manager Guardiola claimed he’d be watching the golf rather than keeping an eye on the Red’s results last month. Klopp returned the favour by switching focus to their own fixtures when quizzed about his rival’s remaining games.

Josep Guardiola

“Why should we think where City could slip? We don’t have to think about those things,” Klopp said via the Express. “We are happy with the points we have and now we are focused on the next game.

“We have Newcastle and Wolves – a really difficult team to play against. If we have 97 points then let’s go for it. It will still be history. We have to create our own history. Let’s carry on and see.”

Liverpool engineered a resounding 5-0 victory over relegated Huddersfield on Friday a result that puts the pressure back on Manchester City. Klopp referred to the performance from that game as ‘perfect’ and insisted his side must now switch focus to the Champions League tie with Barcelona

FBL-ENG-PR-LIVERPOOL-HUDDERSFIELD

That semi-final fixture could be crucial as the winner of the clash will be the strong favourite to go on to lift the Champions League. Liverpool reached the final last year but suffered disappointment as they were undone by a dominant Real Madrid side, who lifted the trophy for a third year running.

Klopp also finished runner-up in the competition with his former club Borussia Dortmund and lost the Europa League final in his first season at Liverpool. European competitions remain a blotch on his record and the German will no doubt go all out, with arguably his best chance to date, to win the tournament.

Stoke City: Ignore the Bookies, Nathan Jones’ Rousing Speeches Alone Won’t Save Club From Decline

Nathan Jones has proved a popular choice with fans for his rousing press conferences and exciting predictions of the future. However, underneath that charisma lies a sinking Stoke side, that’s in worse shape now than when the Welshman took over.

Stoke have been installed as early favourites alongside newly-relegated Fulham to secure promotion next season, albeit in the absence of odds for any side currently still within a shot of promotion this year.

Tom Cairney

The Potters expected to be one of those sides last August but were met with another season of failure and troubles. Fans are once again rallying for a new season under a new leader but the cold, hard numbers suggest Stoke are in for more of the same under Jones.

Jones has had the best part of half a Championship campaign to show his hand but Stoke are still performing at a worse rate than they were under Gary Rowett. Stoke averaged 1.34 points per game under Rowett and scoring an average of 1.15 goals per league game.

The Potters are now averaging just a point a game and scoring 0.68 goals per game in a significant drop off on both stats. That equates to a difference of 15 points and a staggering 22 goals had both managers completed a respective full Championship campaign.

Ashley Williams,Ryan Shawcross,Oghenekaro Etebo

For a side who are already one of the lowest scorers in the league that’s a difference between mid-table obscurity and relegation, never mind promotion. Jones has called for patience whilst he tries to implement his own ideas pre-season but it’s a huge gap to make up.

Automatic promotion favourites are currently averaging 2 points a game, with the minimum standard for a playoff spot sitting at 1.55 points per game. That’s over double where Stoke is currently at, a pretty seismic change in fortunes over four months just to secure sixth place.

Transfers don’t look a strong sign of hope either regardless of Jones’ current insistence on bringing in ‘Stoke players’. The club has had a pretty dreadful record of incomings in recent years and surely need to balance the books after splashing big on a promotion charge this year.

Nathan Jones

Taking into account the predicted drop of revenue that relegation enforced and the losses in this year’s market put Stoke at an estimated loss of around £78m. Even the most optimistic estimations put the club well in breach of FFP rules before any wages have been paid.

Jones could be forced to offload star players just to balance the books before he can even think about signing improvements. Either way there surely has to be more significant outgoings than incomings this summer, which will make progress difficult.

Not to mention Stoke’s £60m+ of deadwood currently away from the club that needs to be offloaded for as much compensation as possible. This summer could be just as cruel as prosperous for Stoke fans and the weight of expectation hung heavy on Jones’ predecessor.

FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-HANOVER-DORTMUND

There is no good reason beyond said rousing comments to suggest Stoke will be anywhere near the promotion picture next season either. It’s time for many to lower their expectations and act surprised if the seemingly impossible does happen.

Confused and Confusing Ryan Sessegnon No-Show a Reminder of Why He Needs to Escape Fulham Hell

Y’know when you’re a kid – big enough to be walking around but not really big enough to know what’s happening, ever – and you get lost in Tesco? The big Tesco, not a little Express or something?

There’s that crystallised thought: I don’t know where I am, and I don’t know how I got here, but I wish I wasn’t and I don’t know what to do about it. I am, to quote a popular American stand-up, very small and I have no money, so you can imagine the kind of stress that I am under.

Anyway, Ryan Sessegnon played on the right wing for Fulham against Cardiff on Saturday, having already started league games at left-back, wing-back, left-midfield, left-wing and up front for the Cottagers this season.

This was his 24th start of the campaign, under a third manager, in a new league. And he’s 18. And six of the players who started with him on Saturday weren’t in the squad last season.

You can see where this is going, right?

FBL-ENG-PR-FULHAM-CARDIFF

Ryan Sessegnon is very small, and he’s lost in the supermarket that Fulham’s ownership went full Supermarket Sweep in last summer.

As part of a front three featuring Aleksandar Mitrovic (huge) and Ryan Babel (way bigger than you’d expect, seriously), Sessegnon looked like everything was too big for him. The opponents, the occasion – basically everything but his shirt. He looked completely out of place.

But…of course he looks out of place. He doesn’t have a place in this Fulham team. The way he’s been treated this season would’ve crippled the campaign of a seasoned veteran, never mind a teenager playing his first year of top flight football.

He’s been in the team, and out of the team. He’s played for the manager who trusted him to play a leading role in a promotion battle, and he’s played for Premier League-winning Claudio Ranieri – who didn’t trust him at all. Now he’s playing for Scott Parker.

When Sessegnon stayed put over the summer and didn’t look to force a move to a club like Tottenham or United, it was the smart play. The sensible option. Stay, get the playing time in a system that you know, for a club who know you. Then Fulham spent the last year blowing all of that goodwill, and stunted the growth of the one transcendent talent they have.

His contract ends next summer, although there is some talk of the club having an extension option built in. This time, there’s no reason for him to hesitate. They’ve messed him around for nine months and, however much the fans love him, he can’t risk that happening again.

Get out while you can.

Fulham 1-0 Cardiff: Report, Ratings & Reaction as Bluebirds’ Survival Hopes Take Major Hit

Fulham grabbed a late win through a Ryan Babel wonder-strike to deal a devastating blow to Cardiff City’s hopes of Premier League survival on Saturday afternoon.

The Bluebirds were second best at Craven Cottage all afternoon, and the hosts made it three wins on the bounce as they end a poor season on a high.

In a game where Cardiff would have been targeting no less than three points, they rarely pushed forward and caused little threat to the home goal. Fulham, who controlled much of the game looked as though they would be made to rue missed chances, before but a Babel beauty ten minutes from time gave his side a late win.

The quality of the game was hampered by the strong gales of storm Hannah, but the home side had the wind in their sales in the first half, as Aleksandar Mitrovic forced a wonderful save from Neil Etheridge. Just before half time, Ryan Sessegnon had a great chance to put the hosts ahead, but he scuffed his shot wide.

In the second half, Fulham maintained their pressure and looked more like making the breakthrough. However, this left gaps in behind and Cardiff attempted to exploit them as the game became more stretched.

Despite this, the away side did not look much like scoring and Fulham punished them late on. Warnock’s side responded with some battling attacking play, and came incredibly close to an equaliser when Junior Hoilett hit the underside of the bar. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough and they suffered a devastating 1-0 defeat.

Here’s our breakdown of this one.

Fulham

Key Talking Point

Fulham fans’ attention may have been fixed on their starlet Ryan Sessegnon this afternoon. Amid rumoured interest from Tottenham Hotspur, the youngster recently refused to rule out a move away from Craven Cottage this summer.

Today could have spelled one of the final opportunities for Cottagers fans to catch a glimpse of the winger in the white and black of Fulham. However, the 18-year-old played as though his mind was elsewhere, and struggled to get a foot in the game.

The 2018 summer saw a number of high profile players join the west London side – could it be that the summer of 2019 sees several high profile departures?

Sessegnon heads a list of Fulham players who saw Craven Cottage as the perfect place to test their mettle in the Premier League, but following a woeful season, these players could soon be on their way out.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Rico (6); Odoi (6), Le Marchand (5), Ream (7), Bryan (6); Chambers (6), Anguissa (6), Cairney (7*); Sessegnon (5), Babel (7), Mitrovic (6)

Substitutes: Christie (6)

STAR MAN

Tom Cairney

Following what has been an up and down season for Tom Cairney, the Scottish international was the standout player for Fulham on Saturday afternoon. If it weren’t for a couple of horrible misses from team mate Mitrovic, Cairney would have had an assist or two to his name.

Fulham controlled much of the game and that was owed in part to the 28 year-old’s control of the midfield. With his deft passing, Cairney was able to create several openings for the home side and get his team mates into dangerous positions.

Having been out of the team for much of the season, the midfielder may have his head turned this summer as he is sure to attract interest from several Premier League clubs. Cairney was instrumental in getting the Cottagers into the top flight and even scored the winner in the play-off final at Wembley. If Fulham want to bounce straight back next season, the key could be holding onto their star midfielder.

Cardiff

Key Talking Point

Cardiff now look as though they have a mountain to climb if they want to stay in the Premier League. To have any chance of survival, they will need at least four points from their remaining two games, which come against Crystal Palace and Manchester United.

Warnock may rue the tactics he employed against Fulham, as his Cardiff team looked happy to settle for a point all afternoon. Only after the home side had broken the deadlock did the Bluebirds play with any real urgency, by which point it was a little too late. In their ten minute spell of pressure, they still had several clear cut chances, but couldn’t make any of them count.

FBL-ENG-PR-FULHAM-CARDIFF

With Brighton playing Newcastle in Saturday’s evening kick-off, Cardiff will have to wait and see where they stand going into their penultimate game. Should the Seagulls take all three points, it would all but end Cardiff’s chances of survival as they would be six points behind with a far inferior goal difference.

Next weekend they host a Palace side without much to play for and will be hoping the Eagles are already on the beach, as they look to earn a vital three points. However, Cardiff fans will probably feel it is now too little too late, as a return to England’s second tier looms.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Etheridge (7); Peltier (6), Morrison (6), Manga (6), Bennett (6); Gunnarsson (6), Bacuna (7), Camarasa (6); Mendez-Laing (7*), Hoilett (5), Niasse (5)

Substitutes: Ward (6), Healey (6), Reid (N/A)

STAR MAN

Nathan Mendez-Laing continued his good form for Cardiff on Saturday afternoon as the winger proved to be his side’s main threat on the counter-attack. In a cagey game which lacked in quality, the former Wolves man caused problems for the home side and looked most like getting a breakthrough for the Bluebirds.

Even after switching wings with team mate Hoilett, Mendez-Laing still got the better of opposing left-back Joe Bryan and nearly set up a goal on the hour mark – only for his cross to narrowly avoid Leandro Bacuna. With the score still at 0-0, it was Mendez-Laing who looked Cardiff’s only real threat.

FBL-ENG-PR-FULHAM-CARDIFF

Only after going behind did any of his team mates contribute significantly to their attacking play and the winger may be left frustrated following the game. With Warnock being manager he is, Cardiff players won’t be allowed to drop their heads going into their final games and the boss will be looking to Mendez-Laing to make the difference once more.

Looking Ahead

The Cottagers have just two Premier League games remaining before they return to the second tier. An away trip to Wolves comes before Fulham close the season at home to Newcastle. Scott Parker will be hoping his side can learn as much as possible from these two games and take some much needed positivity into the 2019/20 Championship campaign.

Sergio Rico

Cardiff on the other hand face two huge fixtures in their bid for Premier League survival. First up they are at home to Palace, where the Bluebirds will be desperate for all three points in front of a packed house. Warnock’s side end their campaign at Old Trafford, and they will be looking to take advantage of Manchester United’s poor form and snatch a positive result.

Let’
