Few sets of fans in the Football League will have seen as much action in the first three rounds of the season than those following Norwich City.
Daniel Farke’s men have scored six times so far but have taken only a solitary point. That’s because of their struggles at the other end of the pitch where the Canaries are yet to keep a clean sheet and have conceded eight times.
Only QPR have a worse defensive record at the time of writing and they lost their previous outing 7-1.
Norwich host Preston North End on Wednesday and are 31/20 (2.55) to pick up their first victory of the season. It’s a relatively well-matched encounter according to the bookmaker who go 2/1 (3.0) about the visitors and 23/10 (3.30) on the draw.
Preston aren’t known as the most expansive side in the second tier, but their early season performances are encouraging ahead of this trip to East Anglia.
Alex Neil’s men have averaged 14 shots per game so far, putting them 8th in the division in that metric and shouldn’t be overlooked as a totally defensive outfit under the former Norwich boss. Last season, 47 per cent of Preston’s away league games saw three or more goals, too.
The hosts average 16 shots per game plus a league high of 6.3 shots on target – level with Leeds at the time of writing.
While it’s no surprise to see all of Norwich’s Championship games so far have gone over 2.5 goals, Preston’s 2-2 draw with Stoke City last time out showed that they are not to be underestimated in the final third.
These figures are from a small sample size – there can be plenty of variance between matches in the first few weeks – but the initial indications are that goals should be on the cards once more.
