Villarreal v Valencia Betting Tips: Latest odds, team news, preview and predictions

Both these regional rivals began their respective European campaigns in disappointing fashion this week and will be hoping to bounce back in La Liga.

On their return to the Champions League following a three year absence, Valencia were soundly beaten 2-0 at home by Juventus, while Villarreal could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Rangers in the Europa League.

As well, both Valencia and Villarreal have been underwhelming domestically, meaning this weekend’s regional derby has plenty riding on it already.

Latest odds

Villarreal have been extremely dominant in this fixture in recent seasons, winning five of the last six meetings.

bet365 price them at 5/4 (2.25) to pick up another three points on Sunday, while Valencia can be backed at 23/10 (3.30) and the draw is available at 9/4 (3.25).

Team news

Valencia midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia missed the Juventus game with an ankle injury and is a major doubt for the trip to the Estadio de la Ceramica.

Villarreal, meanwhile, remain without young defensive midfielder Santigo Caseres who suffered a knee injury three weeks ago.

Preview

Villarreal’s last home league win came against Valencia back in May, with the Yellow Submarine losing their opening two matches in their own stadium this season.

Things are not much better for Los Che, either, who are yet to win a league match this term with three draws and a defeat so far.

Despite strengthening the squad over the summer with a number of attacking players, Valencia have so far failed to repeat their impressive scoring form of last year when they were the fourth-highest scorers in La Liga.

Villarreal too have struggled in front of goal – netting just twice in four league encounters – and there is every chance that the run of low-scoring games between these two rivals continues on Sunday.

Tips and predictions

Under 2.5 goals has paid out in six of the last seven derbies and looks like an excellent option at 17/20 (1.85).

Opposing goals at both ends has also been a consistent recent winner in this fixture and is offered at a healthy looking 21/20 (2.05).
