After a week of training with a mix of senior and U-23 players, USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter has released his 28-man roster to take on Jamaica and Venezuela in the squad’s final warm-up matches before the 2019 Gold Cup begins.
Jamaica marks the first of two tune-up matches for the United States as they prepare for this year’s edition of the competition set to begin in just over two weeks. Final rosters for the Gold Cup are due by midnight 5 June so this match will be the final chance for fringe players to make an impression on the manager.
Berhalter called in 19 additional players to the camp in Annapolis, Maryland, as they set for training ahead of the warm-up against the Caribbean side.
Along with the roster announcement, Berhalter was also quoted (via MLS’ official site) giving some quick feedback on the camp thus far. The manager stated: “After a great week of training, we now enter the phase of playing competitive matches. The game against Jamaica will represent an opportunity for us to evaluate new prospects as well as continue to develop the group for the Gold Cup. We are excited about the group coming in and the opportunity ahead of us this summer.”
Some surprise names were included in the release, with MLS based forward Jackson Yueill being the only player not on the 40-man provisional Gold Cup roster being called in for the Jamaica match. Derby County midfielder Duane Holmes was also a surprise after just recently coming back from an injury that kept the 24-year-old out of the Championship promotion playoff final against Aston Villa.
