Liverpool ‘Start Negotiations’ With Timo Werner Amid Rival Interest From Man Utd

Liverpool have begun early negotiations with RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, while Manchester United sent scouts to watch the Germany international in action last week.

The 23-year-old was set to enter the last year of his contract this season, but Werner put pen to paper on a new long-term contract with the Bundesliga’s Red Bull-backed club and he’s gone on to score 15 goals across all competitions.

Liverpool have been long term admirers of Werner, but journalist Duncan Castles claims that the club have only just started negotiations with the striker’s camp, while he added that Manchester United have also sent scouts to watch the Germany international this season.

“Liverpool are very keen on Werner and have started negotiations with his camp over a transfer,” Castles told the Transfer Window Podcast.

“I can tell you that Manchester United sent their head of global scouting, Marcel Bout, to Germany at the weekend to watch the Hertha-Leipzig match and specifically to run his eye over Werner in that game.

“It was a match that Werner scored Leipzig’s opening goal, their equaliser, on 38 minutes from the penalty spot and one of the final goals in the 4-2 victory right at the end of the game, so performed well.

“Their decision has to be made on Werner, whether they can persuade him that Manchester United is a better place for him to go than Liverpool, also whether they can persuade Leipzig to allow him to leave in January.”

There is a release clause written in Werner’s new deal that would allow him to leave RB Leipzig, although it’s understood that it’s not a set fee – the amount will decrease for every season that the forward stays at the Red Bull Arena.

It’s not just Werner’s fee which could be a problem for Liverpool however, as Castles added the Germany international is looking to earn £300k a week in any contract he agrees outside of the Bundesliga.
