Joao Moutinho has signed a new contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers, extending his stay at the club until 2022.
The midfielder’s current deal was due to expire at the end of this season, but Moutinho has been rewarded for his current form with a bumper new contract.
The Portugese international scored only his second Wolves goal in their 2-1 away victory against Bournemouth this Saturday, and has also provided three assists in the Premier League this season.
In a club statement, Moutinho said was thrilled to be staying in the Midlands: “It was a very easy decision because I feel very good here. We did a great job last season and this season we’ll try to do better. That’s what we’re going to do and I’m going to try 100% to help the club to improve.”
Moutinho was instrumental in Wolves qualifying for the Europa League last season – a competition in which they have made a great start – and is yet to miss a league or European fixture this term.
The 33-year-old offers great experience to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, and was voted the Fans’ Player of the Year last campaign. The midfielder is Portugal’s third most-capped player with 116 national team appearances, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo (158) and Luis Figo (127).
Moutinho also won Euro 2016 with his international teammates and is ageing like a fine wine in Wolves’ midfield, offering great tutelage for fellow countryman Ruben Neves.Wolves’ 2-1 win at the Vitality Stadium this weekend – in which Moutinho scored a sublime free kick – saw his team rise to fifth in the Premier League table after 13 matches.
