Manchester United could turn to January loan signings to bolster their squad, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitting that their top targets are unlikely to be available until Summer 2020.
The Red Devils’ recruitment policy has been a bone of contention among fans for a number of seasons, especially in light of the recent injuries that have highlighted the deficiencies of their current squad.
However, it would appear that the Manchester United hierarchy are prioritising long-term strategy over short-term success – meaning fans may have to wait for big-money arrivals.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash with Sheffield United, as reported by The Mirror, the United manager stated: “The targets we have are probably not available in January. Not many clubs want to sell players that they would otherwise want to keep in January. Maybe one or two could be a loan deal but that is not a big money thing, it is just to help the team.”
The Red Devils’ start to the season has been hampered by injury, with Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw among the many players to spend lengthy periods on the treatment table.
Solskjaer has often turned to youth to plug the gaps, but the United boss has revealed the club are planning for the long term and won’t resort to quick fixes in January.
He added: “It is not about ‘X’ amount of money we have to spend – it is about who do we think will be good for the club in the long-term, not just three or four months. But we are getting players back to fitness and we are looking at what can be available for us.”
