Kingsley Coman was forced off with what looked like a serious knee injury during Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash with Tottenham at the Allianz Arena.
The two sides were facing off on the final matchday of the group stages, with Jose Mourinho’s side hoping to seek revenge from their embarrassing 7-2 defeat to Die Roten earlier in the campaign.
It got off to a poor start for the visitors, who fell behind to Coman’s opening goal. Serge Gnabry drove with the ball down the right-hand side, with his deflected cross finding its way to Coman, who coolly slotted beyond Paulo Gazzaniga. Spurs hit back not long after though, as Ryan Sessegnon’s first goal for the club leveled matters on the 20 minute mark.
Just five minutes later, however, Coman went to ground in desperately unfortunate fashion. Chasing a ball down the left channel he appeared to get his studs caught in the turf, resulting in the Frenchman’s knee buckling underneath him as he attempt to keep the ball in play.
Coman eventually got up on his feet, but was replaced by Thomas Muller. Early suggestions are that the forward has suffered an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury.
The 23-year-old has been plagued with injuries throughout his career, with various long-term and short term issues preventing the France international from having any sustained run of first-team football.
Last season injury limited Coman to just 21 Bundesliga outings, in which time he netted six goals and registered four assists as Die Roten secured the title for a seventh successive season.
Taking on Spurs in southern Germany, Bayern know that no matter the result they will finish the group as winners, having won all five of their Champions League matches this season and commanding a five point lead over Mourinho’s side. For Tottenham, they are also assured of qualification to the knockout rounds, however, only as runners-up.
