It is a move that could follow Germany’s lead. Bundesliga games are set to return as soon as next month, although the New York Times reported it will be ‘TV-only entertainment’ and will likely remain that way until the end of the calendar year.
Italy was the first badly affected country in Europe after the disease spread west from China. But with the peak now passed, reports from Italy suggest an easing of the lockdown is coming in early May, with games potentially back on a few weeks after that.
Sport Mediaset alleges a leaked government document suggests there will be no fans in Serie A stadiums until 2021. The course of action for now is to begin easing the lockdown measures, but maintain social distancing for a while longer – something which obviously wouldn’t be possible if thousands of people gather inside a football stadium in close contact.
In Serie A, every team has at least 12 games left to play, with a handful on 13 to go.
There is still plenty to be decided, most notably in the title race, where Lazio have surged past a fading Inter to emerge as the closest challengers to reigning champions Juventus. Only a single point currently separates the two clubs at the top.
Further down the league, Roma are on the tails of Atalanta in the battle for the fourth and final Champions League place, while the relegation battle is far from over as big names likes Torino, Sampdoria, Udinese and Genoa remain in potential danger from beneath.
