José Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur side travel to Bramall Lane on Thursday evening to face off against an out-of-form Sheffield United.

The visitors have recorded a draw and a win since the restart of the Premier League as they keep their slim chances of Champions League qualification alive.

As for the Blades, their recent 3-0 defeat to Manchester United epitomised their post-lockdown troubles as their hopes of European football next season begin to fade. Chris Wilder’s men were also dumped out of the FA Cup by Arsenal on Sunday, as a last-gasp Dani Ceballos goal handed the Gunners victory.

The home side continue to sweat over the fitness of defender Jack O’Connell, who has been sorely missed in Wilder’s normally impressive back three. They will likely be without midfielder – and fantasy football mainstay – John Lundstram, too, after he was forced off after 35 minutes against Arsenal with a shoulder problem.

Wilder will, however, be able to welcome John Egan back to Premier League action as he returns from the suspension that kept him out of the defeat at Old Trafford, while Dean Henderson has extended his loan spell to the end of the season.

As for Spurs, their injury troubles seemed to be behind them, with Japhet Tanganga the only major doubt for Thursday’s fixture. Mourinho’s men have not been in action since 23 June, and should be well rested ahead of a critical clash in their season.

The hosts have endured a torrid return to competitive football, losing three of their four games in all competitions, including a 3-0 thrashing against Newcastle at St James’ Park. The drop off in form since the restart has been startling, given their resilience earlier in the campaign.

As for Spurs, a solid defensive display at home to Manchester United, as well as a comfortable victory over West Ham, has boosted optimism around the club. While a top four spot still appears unlikely, Mourinho will at least be looking to guide his side into the Europa League next season.

It’s too early to tell if Spurs’ revival will continue, but there has been enough evidence to suggest that Sheffield United truly are well of the pace.

The Blades had performed admirably pre-lockdown, yet look nowhere near the side they were just three months ago – a time when they were genuine Champions League qualification contenders.

While all is not lost for the home side, the presence of a fit again Harry Kane may be too much for them, particularly if key defender O’Connell is still in the treatment room.
