AC Milan 1 Barcelona 0: Andre Silva snatches last-gasp win

Andre Silva’s dramatic goal with almost the last kick of the game secured a 1-0 victory for AC Milan over an unfamiliar Barcelona side in the International Champions Cup on Sunday.

Barca were missing Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, Ousmane Dembele, Jordi Alba, Samuel Umtiti and Philippe Coutino, as the majority of the club’s first-team stars were afforded an additional period of recovery following their appearance in the World Cup, while new signing Arturo Vidal is yet to link up with the squad.

In their absence, head coach Ernesto Valverde started Brazilian newcomers Arthur and Malcom against the Rossoneri in Santa Clara, where the Blaugrana dominated proceedings without reward in the first half.

The contest at Levi’s Stadium appeared destined for a penalty shootout, but Andre Silva had other ideas, the Portuguese forward beating Marc-Andre ter Stegen at the substitute goalkeeper’s near post to win it in the 92nd minute after being found in space by Franck Kessie.

The goal came against the run of play in California, but the result will nevertheless encourage Gennaro Gattuso’s men ahead of the new Serie A campaign.

Barca meanwhile will hope to welcome back some of their more established stars when they take on Sevilla in the Supercopa de Espana.

The reigning Liga champions had threatened inside the first minute, Paco Alcacer forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma to concede a corner by making a smart save low down to his right.

Alessio Romagnoli had to be alert 10 minutes later, the defender breaking up a promising exchange of passes between Arthur and Malcom.

Milan’s first clear chance fell to Fabio Borini, who saw his shot from the centre of the penalty area blocked by Marlon, prompting half-hearted appeals for handball against the defender.

It was Barca, though, who continued to create the bulk of the opportunities, Malcom narrowly failing to get on the end of a well-judged forward pass from Rafinha in the 19th minute.

And on the half-hour mark, Ricardo Rodriguez had to make a timely sliding tackle to prevent Nelson Semedo getting a shot away from a tight angle down the right side of the box.

With nine minutes remaining in the half, Arthur unleashed a fierce drive from outside the area, a diving Donnarumma proving equal to the task of keeping it out.

The onslaught continued as the half-time whistle approached, Malcom hitting the post and Munir El Haddadi whistling an effort from range narrowly wide, with Donnarumma seemingly beaten on both occasions.

As expected, both coaches made several changes during the second half.

Ter Stegen, on for Jasper Cillessen in the Barca goal, had to be alert to deny Hakan Calhanoglu in the 47th minute.

That chance came on the break after Barca had penalty appeals for an apparent stamp by Rodriguez on Rafinha ignored by referee Baldomero Toledo.

Andre Silva, wasted one of the few good chances to arrive in a scrappy second half when he fired into the side-netting after good work from Calhanoglu in the 67th minute.

Ricard Puig should have won it in the 90th minute, the Barca substitute dragging a shot wide after being found unmarked by Semedo’s cutback.

Instead it was Milan who snatched the victory, Calhanoglu and Kessie showing considerable composure to carve out the opening for Andre Silva on the break, and the former Porto attacker made no mistake from close range.

No Ronaldo? No problem! Madrid may not need a big-money replacement for Portugal star

Nobody said replacing Cristiano Ronaldo would be easy, but Real Madrid may just have the talent to pull it off.

The Portugal star left the Blancos last month, sensationally joining Juventus in a €100 million (£88m/$117m) transfer.

Madrid have been linked with a number of big-money replacements for Ronaldo but on Saturday, ironically against Juventus, the Blancos showed they may not need to break the bank for the likes of Eden Hazard or Neymar this summer.

The Blancos were disjointed and devoid of ideas for much of the first half at FedEx Field outside of Washington D.C., falling behind through a Dani Carvajal own goal.

But just before half-time of the International Champions Cup match, Gareth Bale provided evidence of his ample quality – and perhaps of the likelihood of a more significant role in 2018-19.

The Welshman picked up a loose clearance at the top of the box and rifled in a quickly taken half-volley inside the far post to level the score.

Following Madrid’s Champions League final victory over Liverpool in May, both Bale and Ronaldo indicated they were considering a Bernabeu exit in the summer.

Ronaldo, of course, followed through, making a sensational move to Madrid’s opponents on Saturday.

The Portugal star’s exit cleared the way for Bale to potentially play a much bigger role than he did last term, when he was an occasional starter under Zinedine Zidane even in the periods when he was healthy.

Gareth Bale Real Madrid Juventus ICC 2018

With rumoured moves for Hazard, Neymar or Kylian Mbappe yet to materialise, the Welshman looks poised to step up into a leading role this season; heath permitting of course.

Bale was taken off at half-time, after which Marco Asensio and Vinicius Junior took over.

The duo came in off the bench and immediately combined for a counter-attacking goal just after the break, with the Spain international providing the finish from the Brazilian teenager’s pass.

Asensio, playing in an unfamiliar false nine position, grabbed his second goal just 10 minutes later on a neat turn and sliding finish in the box.

The 22-year-old has been tipped as a potential world star for much of the past two years. He’s shown plenty of flashes, but he could make a leap in 2018-19 with more playing time likely available.

Vinicius, meanwhile, only just joined the Blancos from Flamengo in his native Brazil.

The 18-year-old wowed the crowd at FedEx with his tremendous skills and burst of pace, looking every bit a player who can be an impact sub for Madrid this season.

Following the game Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui didn’t address his club’s search for a Ronaldo replacement, but did praise his club’s stars on the night.

“I don’t talk about players who don’t belong to Real Madrid,” Lopetegui said at his press conference.

“What I can say is that Marco and [Bale and Vinicius] were excellent today. Marco was excellent playing a position he doesn’t normally play. He did it quite well as did the others and overall I’m extremely happy.”

Madrid went on to win 3-1 and they may have earned something far more important than an ICC victory in the process.

If the Blancos don’t break the bank to replace Ronaldo, Lopetegui knows he might just have the squad already at his disposal to overcome the Portuguese’s absence.

Maurizio Sarri: Chelsea needed Jorignho much more than Manchester City did

Maurizio Sarri is happy his side secured Jorginho from under the noses of Manchester City and he says it could be a factor in closing the gap with between them and Chelsea.

Jorginho had long been lined up to join Manchester City, but they were left frustrated as Chelsea’s appointment of Sarri as their manager helped them take the Italy international in a £55 million ($72 million) deal from Napoli .

Guardiola and Man City are thought to be unhappy at losing the player they had long expected to sign, but Sarri believes his side needed him more, with the Manchester club having finished 30 points above them last season.

“I will try to explain all the [transfer] situation to [Guardiola] on Sunday,” Sarri told reporters. “Jorginho is one of the steps to try to reduce the gap. He’s only the first. But the rest is to work and [ignore] the market.

“We need Jorginho more than City, so it’s right that Jorginho is here. Pep has great midfielders, central midfielders. Fernandinho is a wonderful player. The table of the last PL told me City 100, Chelsea 70 points.

“We have to try to reduce 30 points and I know only one way: to work. My job is this, to improve my players. I will try to do it. I don’t think that every problem can be resolved by the market.”

Sarri’s first competitive game as Chelsea manager is against his friend Guardiola on Sunday, as the FA Cup winners face the Premier League winners in the Community Shield at Wembley.

The match sees Sarri against Man City, after drawing them last season with Napoli in the Champions League group stage. Sarri recalls that Man City were unplayable when his side faced them in October last season, going 2-0 down after 14 minutes in Napoli’s match at the Etihad Stadium.

“Apart from the tactical point of view, I think it’s very difficult for everybody to play against City,” He continued. “Not only for one player or another. I played against City in November last season, in the best moment of City, of the season. And it was very hard, very difficult. The first 20 minutes was a nightmare, it was horrible.”

Chelsea will be without a number of their top stars in the match on Sunday with the likes of Eden Hazard, N’Golo Kante, Olivier Giroud, Thibaut Courtois, Michy Batshuayi and Gary Cahill all having made the final weekend of the World Cup this summer.

Eden Hazard Croatia World Cup play-off 14072018

Real Madrid had shown an interest in signing Hazard, but they have since cooled their pursuit over the hefty potential price tag. Sarri admits he has spoken to Hazard, but not about transfers as he awaits the return of his club’s talisman after Sunday’s game.

“I talked with him (Hazard) yesterday. We didn’t talk about this [transfers],” Sarri added. “We talked only about ‘can I arrive on Monday instead of Sunday?’ In this moment there is no problem for Hazard.”

Klopp hints at late Liverpool movement before deadline day

Jurgen Klopp has hinted that there could be late movement at Liverpool before the summer deadline passes.

The Reds have already enjoyed a busy window bringing in Fabinho, Alisson and Xherdan Shaqiri, while Naby Keita has completed his move from RB Leipzig.

Big money has been spent improving last season’s Champions League finalists, with it hoped that a Premier League title challenge can be pieced together in 2018-19.

Reinforcements have, however, pushed a number of those already at Anfield down the pecking order, leading to reports of possible exits over the coming days.

Klopp admitted to reporters after a 5-0 friendly victory over Napoli that sales may be sanctioned prior to the window closing on Thursday, saying: “We will see what happens.

“If any player from my team is available, then in every other situation in my life as a manager I would have bought all of them, to be honest. They are all fantastic boys, they are able to play fantastic football.

“In this moment, the squad would be too big, that’s true. But it’s not that that means for us that we give them for free or something like that, Liverpool is strong enough to keep all these players and then we deal with that.

“We are not there to make other teams stronger, that’s not our job.”

Klopp also refused to rule out more additions being made to his ranks, with the German preparing for a busy shift on deadline day.

He said: “I can’t kill your D-Day! People sit the whole day in front of the TV, seeing who buys and sells who. I won’t watch it because I’ll be working.”

Regardless of whether further fresh faces arrive, Klopp believes that he is already working with his strongest squad since taking the Liverpool reins back in October 2015.

He added: “Hopefully, but we will know that after the season because how strong the squad is, the season will show and not the transfers or whatever, or the price you paid, or the money value of the squad.

“It’s only about the football and that’s what we have to do. We have to show day in and day out in the next few weeks and you will always have difficult situations.”

Liverpool will open their Premier League campaign at home to West Ham on August 12.
