1′ Godin supplies the assist, but this goal is all Costa’s. Atleti had looked for a couple of early long balls before that one and their tactic quickly paid off.

1′ GOAL!! What a start for Atleti! 1-0! Costa beats Ramos to a long ball and chases his own header, rifling the ball past Navas from a tight angle on the right. The ball clips the post on the way in. Sensational.

1′ KICK-OFF: The 2018 UEFA Super Cup final is under way! Atleti get us up and running.

This is the fourth time in the last five years that the Super Cup has been contested by two teams from Spain. Madrid have made six previous appearances (four wins) to Atleti’s two (two wins).

Modric is notably on the Madrid bench amid interest from Inter, while Courtois is not involved. World Cup winners Hernandez, Lemar and Griezmann all start for Atleti, facing France team-mate Varane.

SUBS: Antonio Adan, Alex dos Santos, Filipe Luis, Santiago Arias, Jose Gimenez, Thomas Partey, Gelson Martins, Vitolo, Roberto Olabe, Nikola Kalinic, Angel Correa.

ATLETICO MADRID (4-4-2): Jan Oblak; Juanfran, Stefan Savic, Diego Godin, Lucas Hernandez; Saul, Koke, Rodri, Thomas Lemar; Diego Costa, Antoine Griezmann.

SUBS: Kiko Casilla, Andriy Lunin, Nacho, Luka Modric, Lucas Vazquez, Marcos Llorente, Borja Mayoral, Dani Ceballos, Federico Valverde, Vinicius Junior, Sergio Reguilon, Javier Sanchez.

REAL MADRID (4-2-3-1): Keylor Navas; Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo; Toni Kroos, Casemiro; Gareth Bale, Isco, Marco Asensio; Karim Benzema.

Courtois knows today’s opponents well, having previously enjoyed a lengthy loan spell with Atleti, but there are new faces in Diego Simeone’s camp, too, including Thomas Lemar. Antoine Griezmann’s stay provides perhaps their biggest boost.

Of course, Lopetegui’s arrival is far from the only big change in the make-up of these two sides ahead of the new season. The former Spain boss replaces Zinedine Zidane, while Cristiano Ronaldo has departed for Juventus. Luka Modric is still on board for now, though, as Thibaut Courtois leads the acquisitions.

The first European trophy of the season is on the line in Tallinn as Julen Lopetegui’s Madrid reign gets started with a derby against local rivals Atleti.

Barcelona 3 Boca Juniors 0: Messi, Malcom net as Barca win Joan Gamper Trophy

Lionel Messi and new boy Malcom were among the goals as Barcelona cruised to a 3-0 win over Boca Juniors to win the Joan Gamper Trophy.

Having lifted the Supercopa de Espana thanks to a slender 2-1 win over Sevilla on Sunday, Barca again looked in good shape ahead of their title defence in LaLiga, which begins on Saturday against Deportivo Alaves, sweeping a feisty Boca aside with minimal fuss.

Barca gradually found their stride and went close for the first time in the 16th minute – Philippe Coutinho tricking his way past one opponent before forcing Esteban Andrada into flying save with a stinging effort.

Andrada made a mess of things shortly after, however, allowing Malcom’s low drive to squirm under him after the Brazilian had squeezed a shot past Boca right-back Julio Buffarini.

The hosts deservedly doubled their lead six minutes before the break – Messi delicately chipping a fine finish over Andrada after his attempted pass to Coutinho came back off Buffarini and fell perfectly into his path.

But they were fortunate to not concede on the stroke of half-time when Sebastian Villa broke into the area and fired against the left-hand post.

Barca were a little less fluid after eight half-time changes, but Malcom did at least test Andrada from long range in the 55th minute following a clever bit of play by Riqui Puig.

They eventually added a third 23 minutes from time – Rafinha playing a one-two with Luis Suarez, before flicking the ball over Andrada and knocking in from close range.

Paco Alcacer had a late goal disallowed for offside, but Barca eased to victory nevertheless.

Bayern Munich confirm Rudy meeting despite Schalke denials

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has confirmed that midfielder Sebastian Rudy met with Schalke head coach Domenico Tedesco.

The Germany international has become the subject of transfer speculation after just one season with the German champions in which he made 16 Bundesliga starts.

His opportunities seem set to diminish further following Bayern’s signing of Leon Goretzka from Schalke, who are rumoured to be interested in taking Rudy in the opposite direction.

Schalke looked to have moved to the front of the queue when reports emerged claiming head coach Domenico Tedesco had met with the 28-year-old former Hoffenheim man.

Tedesco, speaking at a media conference on Wednesday, declined to comment on the nature of his recent visit to Munich, but Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel claimed no deal had been discussed.

“There hasn’t been any contact with Bayern Munich about [Rudy],” Heidel told reporters.

“Three or four months ago I was with Hasan Salihamidzic at a manager’s meeting. That’s when Rudy’s name was mentioned. There has been nothing since then.”

However, Bayern director Salihamidzic disputed Heidel’s claims on Wednesday afternoon, telling Sport1 that he had approved a meeting between Rudy and Tedesco: “That’s okay, I allowed it.”

Claims of interest from Leipzig were also denied by RB Leipzig’s Ralf Rangnick.

The sporting director turned head coach slammed local media reports of a contract having been agreed as the “mother of all fake news”.

“How you can put that out it is remarkable,” he said. “I thought it must be April Fool’s Day when that was announced.”

Rudy began his professional career with Stuttgart and was part of the Germany squad that flopped at the World Cup.

Newcastle confirm Yedlin knee injury not serious

Newcastle United have confirmed United States defender DeAndre Yedlin did not suffer a serious injury in their Premier League opener.

The 25-year-old limped off the field in the closing minutes against Tottenham, leaving Newcastle down to 10 men, and he had to be helped up the stairs to the dressing room.

Newcastle went on to lose 2-1, and there were fears the right-back could be out an extended period.

Those fears have been calmed by Newcastle however, who announced in a statement: “The club can confirm that the knee injury sustained by DeAndre Yedlin on Saturday was not serious.

“He has been assessed and undergone treatment this week and is likely to resume training with his team-mates shortly.”

It is not yet known if Yedlin will be ready for Newcastle’s next match, a Premier League encounter at Cardiff on Saturday.

Greek danger, Fulham turmoil & fan love – Pajtim Kasami’s story

Two Greek league trophies, one Greek Cup, the Under-17 World Cup and a Puskas Award – aka, FIFA’s Goal of the Year – nomination. Pajtim Kasami’s career has taken him all over Europe and the Switzerland international is still only 26 years old.

Now, heading into the peak of his career, the versatile midfielder has opened up about the challenges he has had to overcome so far and why battling relegation last season provided one of the toughest obstacles in his career.

Kasami joined Swiss side Sion last summer after leaving Olympiakos and avoided relegation in his first season, having spent a total of 10 weeks at the bottom of the table. However, winning the last three games was enough to guarantee survival for a team who had been considered title contenders.

“It was a very tough year,” Kasami told Goal .

“I’m very proud the way I managed to turn it around in the end because it was something that made me feel very bad towards the people who gave me the trust, the fans. It was one of the toughest months in my career.

“I stayed [for] months at home, I didn’t go to see my family. I stayed very calm and tried to always stay positive because there were so many negative things around that it was impossible. But at the end of the day I like to stay home because it’s the place where you can wind down and relax.”

Kasami grew up in Andelfingen, just outside Zurich. By the time he signed for Serie A side Palermo when he was 18, he had already won the U17 World Cup with Switzerland, played for Grasshoppers Zurich and had loan spells with Liverpool and Lazio.

The opportunity to join Palermo was aided by the fact Kasami had signed with super agent Mino Raiola, a representative whose clientele includes the likes of Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Marco Verratti. Interest from the teams such as AC Milan and Roma saw Kasami reject the Italian giants to join Premier League side Fulham, where the midfielder admits he played some of the best football of his career.

Pajtim Kasami

“I called him [Raiola] and asked him to meet. He brings you the facts but he’s also very hard on you because he wants you to perform, to score goals and do well as this is how the market works. It’s also how he could bring me to another level. After one year at Palermo I had two or three different options, I had Rome and Milan in Italy and in England it was Fulham who really wanted me.

“I think my third year in Fulham was my best year. I was playing almost every game. Unfortunately [Mohamed] Al Fayed sold the club to Shahid Khan. It was a big change for the players as we didn’t know what would happen to us. Martin Jol got sacked and we felt that there was panic, then Rene Meleunsteen came in and Felix Magath came in after. Things became more stressful and most of the players left, it made my decision to leave easier.”

While leaving Craven Cottage was a difficult decision, the prospect of Champions League football with Greek champions Olympiakos was an opportunity not to be missed.

“It was a big team and it was easier when I saw they signed players like Ibrahim [Afellay] and [Eric] Abidal from Barcelona. I knew I would go to a club that would win titles and I was happy with the decision that I made.”

Pajtim Kasami

During his time in Greece, Kasami won two Super League titles and the Greek Cup, but in October 2015 he was involved in an incident following a Greek Cup quarter-final against AEK Athens. He was punished by the courts for provoking the Athens supporters.

The following August, Kasami was loaned to Nottingham Forest amid fears for his safety in the country.

“It was the anger after the game, losing the game. It caused a big impact in Greece afterwards but I don’t regret it because I love Olympiakos, the fans and the president. I defended my team-mates and the club.

“Two or three times I was followed by cars at strange times. After the club looked after me and gave me one of their security people who worked around my house. The hate between the two clubs is huge, you can’t imagine.”

The next chapter for Kasami is unknown but the emotional attachment he has to his previous clubs makes him a unique character in an industry that has traditionally been overshadowed by mercenaries. His self belief and persistence going forward will be key to returning to the big time again – a goal that he admits will require patience and hard work.

“When things are going well everyone can be amazing. When things aren’t going well it shows the real person and player. To get out of the negative thoughts I try to do something, like visit my family. Even though when I visit my family when things aren’t going well you always end up talking about football. To be honest, I try to be with people who aren’t involved in football.

“I always get the nice comments from the Fulham fans and obviously the Olympiakos fans are dying for me to go back. They had a chant for me [that translated as] ‘Kasami, don’t ever leave the port’.

“Every move is not because I like to move. I’d love to stay in a place and be satisfied and grow something important. Obviously you have goals whether it’s England or Italy or Spain, it depends. I’m convinced if I’m patient enough and work hard then I will achieve the goals I want to achieve.”
