Manchester United were beaten by Young Boys in stoppage time in their opening Champions League game of the season, a bitter pill to swallow after Cristiano Ronaldo had given the visitors an early lead at the Wankdorf Stadium in Switzerland’s capital.
But the game hinged on Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s dismissal in the first half, with Young Boys making their man advantage count, getting back on level terms and ultimately sealing a comeback win when Jesse Lingard inadvertently gifted Jordan Siebatcheu a 95th minute winner.
It was particularly disappointing for United as it had all started so well…
It just had to be him, didn’t it! ?

What took him so long? @Cristiano takes 13 minutes to score on his Champions League return for @ManUtd.

Do you understand how ridiculously insane this pass is from Bruno Fernandes to find Cristiano Ronaldo? pic.twitter.com/D9NWOGfspY

Cristiano Ronaldo has equaled Messi’s UCL open play goals last season with just 22 minutes played, i know my goat.

Cristiano Ronaldo. The greatest there is. The greatest there was. The greatest there ever will be.

However, it swiftly went downhill from there – Wan Bissaka’s red card followed by an equaliser and that awful late mistake from Lingard.
Inevitably, that led to some mocking Lingard – who has only just won his place back in United’s squad…

Wan-Bissaka been our worst player this season imo.

No. There was no need for Wan-Bissaka to lunge in like that pic.twitter.com/NABxJQepFz

We will still qualify from this group, the red card from Wan-Bissaka changed the game but the substitutions from Ole were awful. #mufc

Turns out it was an awful idea and absolutely didn’t work ?

Moumi Ngamaleu completed more take-ons (7), made more tackles (5) and had more shots (4) than any other player on the pitch against Man Utd.
And he scored the equaliser. pic.twitter.com/oIYfKFCwXh

Sentiment wins you nothing in sport. Jesse Lingard isn’t good enough for United. Full stop. If you want to win things you can’t be letting emotions make decisions.

There was some support for Lingard, though – with messages of support helping to balance out the unnecessary negativity towards his error.
Head up bro, mistakes happen and plenty of time to turn things round! @JesseLingard

Don’t beat yourself up @JesseLingard it happens to the best of us. ❤️ #JLingz
