Bayern Munich respond to rumours about Man Utd-target Thiago

Bayern Munich have ruled out selling Manchester United-linked Thiago Alcantara during the summer transfer window.

The midfielder, 27, has been linked with a big-money switch to Old Trafford in a bid to boost the Red Devils’ chances of winning the Premier League this season.

However, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has rubbished speculation linking Thiago with a move away.

He told Abendzeitung: “Thiago is an important player for us and we have never once articulated the thought that he should leave the club.

“There has never been anything to the story whatsoever.”

New Bayern boss Niko Kovac has also expressed his hope that Thiago will remain at Bayern, though he said he could not offer a “guarantee”.

Kovac said: “I first want to get to know him. I hope and believe that he will play for Bayern [this season].

“But I can’t give a guarantee. We have to wait until the end of August.”

Thiago Alcantara Bayern Munich 2017-18

Goal reported earlier this month that Man City had ruled out making a move for Thiago this summer.

The Spain ace had also been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium after Pep Guardiola’s side missed out on signing Jorginho, who opted for a move to Chelsea instead.

It would have seen Thiago link up again with Guardiola, with the pair having worked together at Barcelona, but the English champions are not aiming to sign the Bayern man.

Premier League Betting: Goals for Manchester City as United look to build fortress in 7/2 dabble of the day

It could be another season of Manchester clubs taking all the headlines in the Premier League.

City, of course, romped to the league title in record-breaking fashion by becoming the first team to hit 100 points and their 106 goals is also the most by any team ever.

United finished second behind their rivals, albeit by 19 points, but did log their best goal difference in five years.

This campaign could well be no different and dabblebet are offering 7/2 (4.50) that City are able to score 90 or more goals and the Red Devils concede fewer than 25 times.

Pep Guardiola’s men had few problems finding the net last term and had netted a whopping 61 times by the end of 2017, thanks to a devastating period early on when they scored 24 times in just five games.

Sergio Aguero was responsible for 21 strikes in just 25 appearances across the season, with Raheem Sterling finally showing his worth with 18 goals and Kevin De Bruyne adding 16 assists.

A repeat looks in the offing as £60 million Riyad Mahrez joins the fray, with the Algerian looking to build on the 12 goals and 11 assists he recorded in the Premier League last term with Leicester City.

Manchester City United dabble of the day graphic

The Red Devils did not find the net with the consistency which they would have liked but conceding just 28 times, by far the second-best defence in the league, meant they were able to finish second.

The heroics of David de Gea and his 115 saves, the most of any top six side, was the underlying reason why United finished so high and another such season from one of the best in the world would not be out of the question.

United have twice conceded fewer than 25 times in a Premier League season and should they improve their defence, there is little to suggest that their backline will not be even sterner than last term.

Mourinho: Man Utd new boy Fred is not a replacement for Carrick

Jose Mourinho says Fred is not a direct replacement for Michael Carrick, but adds the Brazil ace could be a key player in Manchester United’s midfield this season.

The playmaker joined the Red Devils from Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk last month for £52.5million ($70m).

He is yet to feature for United in pre-season after World Cup duty with the Brazilian national team.

The 25-year-old will be a welcome addition to United’s midfield this term following the departure of Michael Carrick, who retired at the end of last season to take up a coaching role at the club.

But Mourinho believes Fred will bring creativity and flair to the centre of the park – and something different to the long-serving midfielder.

“Nemanja Matic, Marouane Fellaini, Paul Pogba and even Ander Herrera are physical and strong players, he told reporters.

“We think having a player like Fred in the squad – who is more technical, more quality of passing in short spaces – he can maybe connect [with] the attacking players.

“He could be an important player for us, but let’s wait. Michael Carrick is Michael Carrick and there is no successor.”
