Mikel Arteta’s Fluid Tactics Give Arsenal Platform for Convincing Win Over Fulham

Arsenal got their 2020/21 Premier League season off to the perfect start on Saturday – three goals, a clean sheet and the new signings both enjoying very impressive debuts.

What more could Mikel Arteta possibly want, eh? The Gunners strolled to a comfortable 3-0 win over newly-promoted Fulham, with Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all getting on the scoresheet.

Some may be quick to claim that the north London club shouldn’t be judged on one Premier League game of the new season as it was merely against a club who are….well, the favourites to go down. To a certain extent, this is true – but the reality is that Fulham actually played reasonably well at times.

Scott Parker’s men pressed cohesively and looked to counter quickly when on the ball, but ultimately, they were simply outclassed and outplayed.

Of course, you could claim that this is what should be expected of Arsenal against a team who have just been promoted – and you would be correct. But it was the manner in which Arteta’s men disabled the Cottagers and prevented them from playing which was so impressive.

From the outset, there was a clear game plan, and every player was aware of their role within the system. And it’s a credit to Arteta that both new signings slotted effortlessly into his setup, without either showing any kind of confusion or lack of understanding of their role.

The Gunners cut off the supply to the Fulham attackers by pressing high up the field. Indeed, Lacazette, Willian and Aubameyang acted as the first line of the press, forcing the hosts into sloppy mistakes. But as Parker’s men broke through and looked to get at their opponents’ backline, Arsenal simply crowded the space in the middle of the park and forced them to go backwards.

It was this constant awareness to occupy all areas that simply prevented Fulham from being able to get in behind.

But perhaps what stood out most from the Gunners’ victory was the way in which they were able to create space for themselves through their fluid setup. Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Hector Bellerin – both of whom have been linked with moves away this summer – occupied the wing-back roles, with Kieran Tierney and Rob Holding either side of Gabriel in defence.

The movement of Maitland-Niles and Bellerin caused problems all afternoon and Fulham were left confused as to who should be tracking who. Instead of making overlapping runs to support Aubameyang and Willian on either side, both wing-backs made darting runs infield to act as an extra attacker.

Indeed, Maitland-Niles was the more effective of the two. His lung-busting sprints through the centre of the pitch took the likes of Tom Cairney and Harrison Reed out the game as they were forced to track his run, creating the space for Aubameyang, Lacazette and Willian to impact the game.

The wing-backs’ runs also allowed Tierney and Holding to get forward and create an overload in midfield. Of course, when either defender did so, either Granit Xhaka or Mohamed Elneny stepped back into the defence to fill in. It was simply overwhelming for the hosts, hence why Parker reacted in the second half by bringing on André-Frank Zambo Anguissa to provide extra solidity.

The problem was, however, it was too late – the damage had already been done.

This system made the Gunners a constant threat going forward, while it particularly played to the strengths of new boy Willian. You would have been forgiven for thinking that the Brazilian had been an Arsenal player for years based on his performance on Saturday, as he linked play expertly and appears to already have a real understanding with his teammates.

Sure, his link up play with those around him was clear to see, but it was the fluid approach adopted by Arteta which provided the platform for the 32-year-old to drift around the pitch and create havoc.

Let us not be mistaken, it was not a faultless display. But the win was the latest showing of the direction Arsenal are heading under Arteta, with each player fighting for the cause and doing their jobs both with and without the ball.

They have already shown that this system and formation can be effective against some of the top teams such as Liverpool. But the victory over Fulham gave even more reason for fans to be excited for the 2020/21 season. The intensity with which the players played, mixed with the intelligent movement of those in red, made Arsenal a constant menace in attack.

The foundations are set and the players have bought into Arteta’s winning formula. Perhaps Fulham are one of the more likely teams to go down this season, but it was the Gunners’ ability to completely disarm their opponents while also carving them open without the ball that gave them such a convincing win. It is a result that will only build confidence ahead of a tough run of fixtures.

Tottenham Women Confirm Signing of Alex Morgan

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Orlando Pride and USWNT striker Alex Morgan for the 2020/21 season.

Morgan is one of the most recognisable names in the women’s game, having risen to global stardom with the USWNT, winning two World Cups with her national side. She gave birth to her daughter Charlie in May, and she hasn’t appeared for the Pride since the previous August.

Few could believe the news when it first broke over the weekend that Spurs, fighting to re-establish themselves in the top-flight after a consolidating 2019/20, were hoping to conclude a deal. It has rapidly grown into a realistic prospect, however, and the club confirmed the deal on Saturday.

She will wear the number 13 shirt she typically wears on the international stage, and comes as one of the most ambitious and exciting signings English women’s football has seen.

Morgan has scored regularly for a number of clubs in the states, honing her reputation as one of the best goalscorers around. She spent time in Europe with Lyon in 2017, but this represents her first venture into English football.

On the international stage, she has scored 107 goals in 169 appearances, putting her fifth on the USWNT’s all-time top scoring charts. Abby Wambach leads the way by some distance on 184.

She will be hoping to use her time in England to rebuild fitness after more than a year out of action, but at 31, she should still be at the peak of her powers once she gets up to speed.

In addition to her two World Cups, Morgan is a former Olympic gold medallist, while she also won Ligue 1 Feminine and the Champions League in her brief stint with Lyon. She could hardly be more decorated, and is a serious, serious coup for Spurs.

Lionel Messi Re-Appointed Barcelona Captain & Set to Play Against Gimnastic

Lionel Messi has been re-elected as Barcelona’s captain for the 2020/21 season, and is likely to appear in their first pre-season friendly against Gimnastic on Saturday evening.

The Argentine’s transfer saga dominated the headlines for a month, but came to a head earlier this month when he committed his short-term future to the club in a groundbreaking interview. After a long absence, he returned to training on Monday, as he and the club look to put their differences behind them for the time being.

Now, Marca report that even further normality has been restored, with the news that Messi will retain the captain’s armband for the season ahead. The squad had their annual vote on the captaincy on Monday, and it was decided that Messi will continue to lead the club into the Ronald Koeman era.

As per last season, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto will share the vice captaincy.

Barca will face Gimnastic on Saturday evening, and named their squad to face the third-tier side earlier on Saturday. It will be their first match of any description since that defeat to Bayern Munich, and some were surprised to see that Messi – having only returned to training on Monday – was named in the squad.

Marca add that he will feature at some stage, but likely in a late cameo as he seeks to build fitness ahead of the new season. Wednesday’s fixture with Girona will see him play a bigger role – ‘at least’ 45 minutes, according to the Spanish outlet.

Messi will be hoping he can lead Barcelona back to the top of Spanish football, having yielded their dominance to Real Madrid in what was a cataclysmic 2019/20. Shipping eight goals to Bayern was the almighty stick that broke the camel’s back, triggering a crisis that tore at the fabric of the club, and very nearly drove Messi away.

The Best and Worst Players to Wear Barcelona’s Number Seven Shirt

Antoine Griezmann

The number 7 is often a coveted shirt, passed down from one elite member of the footballing family to another.

Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best, Jess Bhamra from Bend It Like Beckham – pick an attacking great from any era and there’s a good chance they’ll have donned the number 7 shirt.

But they operate a little bit differently in Catalonia. The number 10 shirt tends to carry a bit more weight in Barcelona thanks to the likes of Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho and Diego Maradona, leaving the number 7 with its thunder well and truly stolen.

There are some Barcelona greats to have pulled on the number 7 shirt through history, in addition to some absolute stinkers. Antoine Griezmann has been handed the shirt number ahead of the 2020/21 campaign following his forgettable debut season at Camp Nou. Is it the vote of confidence he needs or the kiss of death?

Let’s take a look at who the Frenchman should and should not be hoping to emulate.

FOOT/BARCELONE/CHELSEA
Figo was legendary… and then he left | PHILIPPE DESMAZES/Getty Images

When talking about legends from the 90s and noughties, they don’t come much more illustrious than Luis Figo.

The elegant Portuguese midfielder was handed the number 7 shirt upon his arrival at Barcelona in 1995, and did the jersey proud for five seasons as he helped guide the club to two La Liga titles and simultaneously established himself as one of the finest footballers on the planet.

However, even Barcelona’s successful number 7s come with a sting in their tail. Figo made the [delete as appropriate] controversial / brave / mad decision to swap Camp Nou for the Bernabeu to join the club’s bitter rivals Real Madrid. At least he had the decency to wear the number 10 shirt.

Henrik Larsson
Larsson was 32 when he signed for Barcelona | Luis Bagu/Getty Images

Snapping up a striker closing in on his 33rd birthday on a free transfer from Celtic would probably not be the recipe for European success today.

But that’s what happened to Henrik Larsson in 2004 when Barcelona recruited the 32-year-old forward. He endured an injury plagued debut season, but played an important role in Barcelona’s double-winning campaign the following season.

The Swedish great scored 15 goals and came off the bench to devastating affect in the Champions League final, setting up both goals as Barcelona came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1.

David Villa
Villa enjoyed a stunning first season at Barcelona | Alex Livesey/Getty Images

This is how slim the pickings are for Barcelona – arguably two of their greatest number 7s spent a good portion of their time at Camp Nou on the sidelines.

Villa made 119 appearances for Barça, scoring 48 goals across three seasons with the club. He missed eight months of action after breaking his leg in 2011, meaning he was largely restricted to substitute appearances during his final season.

But his debut season alone made the forward a top class number 7. Villa was instrumental in Barcelona’s double-winning campaign, scoring a stunning curling effort to wrap up victory in the 2011 Champions League final.

Arda Turan
Turan’s Barcelona career quickly went downhill | Robbie Jay Barratt – AMA/Getty Images

Turan arrived from Atletico Madrid in a €34m deal in 2015 – but a 2016 Champions League group stage hat-trick aside, he never really lived up to his price tag.

After not playing a single minute during the opening five months of the 2017/18 season, the attacking midfielder joined İstanbul Başakşehir on a two-and-a-half-year loan.

Turan’s loan move didn’t go much better. He was slapped with a 16-match ban for pushing over an assistant referee in May 2018. What shirt number was he wearing? 14. Famously twice as bad as 7.

Alfonso
Alfonso never got going at Barcelona | Getty Images/Getty Images

It seems harsh to lump Alfonso Perez in with this category of expensive underachievers, but someone has to be the scapegoat for Barcelona’s weird 1990s habit of dishing out number 7 to literally just about anyone.

Five-time Soviet Union international Igor Korneev donned the shirt for his single season at the club, to academy graduate Juan Carlos Moreno, who made seven first team appearances before scuttling back to the reserves.

But Alfonso was an actual player Barcelona paid good money for – over £14m back in 2000. The forward – who adopted the shirt directly from Luis Figo – scored just twice in his first season at the club. He was loaned out twice and left the club after just two years. But importantly, he didn’t go to Real Madrid, so he’s probably still more popular than his number 7 predecessor.

Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho was given the number 7 shirt ahead of his first full season at the club | Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

Has there been a more anti climatic signing in recent memory?

After pursuing Coutinho for a good six months, Barcelona finally landed their man in January 2018, and were £105m lighter for it.

What ensued was:

– Coutinho underwhelmed during his first full season in charge
– Coutinho was sent out on loan to Bayern Munich
– Liverpool won the Premier League title thanks to the fee they received for Coutinho
– Coutinho came off the bench to score two and set up one at Bayern beat Barcelona 8-2 in the Champions League quarter finals
– Coutinho and Bayern won the Champions League

So everyone’s a winner?

Fulham 0-3 Arsenal: Player Ratings as Gunners Cruise to Victory on Opening Weekend

Arsenal picked up all three points at Craven Cottage with a comfortable 3-0 win against newly-promoted Fulham on Saturday in the first game of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

The hosts actually made the brighter start, but it was the Gunners who took the lead within ten minutes through Alexandre Lacazette. The striker simply tapped home after Fulham failed to clear their lines. New arrival Willian almost doubled the north London side’s lead midway through the first half, but his free-kick crashed against the post.

The Gunners doubled their lead less than five minutes into the second half, as new signing Gabriel powered the ball home from a corner. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made it 3-0 before the hour mark as he rounded off an outstanding team move, curling the ball into the far corner. Arsenal saw out the game to pick up a clean sheet and all three points.

Let’s get into some player ratings for both sides, shall we? Oh, go on then.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Michael Hector

Marek Rodak (GK) – 5/10 – Kept his place in the Fulham side despite the arrival of Alphonse Areola and although he conceded three times, he couldn’t have done much about any of the goals.

Denis Odoi (RB) – 5/10 – Acted as an outlet on the right, getting forward to support attacks and link play. However, he struggled to deal with the overlapping runs made by the likes of Maitland-Niles.

Michael Hector (CB) – 7/10 – One of Fulham’s star performers in the second half of the 2019/20 Championship season, Hector put in another solid defensive display. Marshalled the backline well in general, despite moments of lapses in concentration.

Tim Ream (CB) – 3/10 – Should he be starting for Fulham this season in the Premier League? The answer is probably not. In fact, definitely not. The centre-back was at fault for the opener, and looked shaky throughout.

Joe Bryan (LB) – 4/10 – Looked to get forward and support attacks, but was unable to as he left gaping holes in defence for the Gunners to expose when doing so.

FBL-ENG-PR-FULHAM-ARSENAL

Harrison Reed (CM) – 6/10 – Fresh from making his loan move permanent, Reed picked up where he left off in the Championship. It may have ended in defeat, but Reed put in another assured display.

Tom Cairney (CM) – 4/10 – Struggled to really influence the game, Fulham need more from Cairney.

Josh Onomah (CAM) – 4/10 – Onomah showed a few nice touches, but was unable to really get hold of the ball in dangerous positions.

Neeskens Kebano
Fulham struggled to test Leno | Clive Rose/Getty Images

Neeskens Kebano (RW) – 5/10 – On the few occasions Fulham got forward, Kebano lacked the quality to pick out the final pass. Worked hard, but Kebano must take his chances in future games.

Ivan Cavaleiro (LW) – 5/10 – See Kebano.

Aboubakar Kamara (ST) – 5/10 – He isn’t Aleksandar Mitrovic. Fulham need a backup striker to support Mitrovic.

Scott Parker

Aleksandar Mitrovic (ST) – 5/10

Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (CM) – 6/10

Bernd Leno (GK) – 6/10 – Coming back into the starting lineup replacing Emiliano Martinez, Leno didn’t have too much to do. But he did make an early mistake which could have been punished.

Hector Bellerin (RWB) – 6/10 – Provided an outlet on the right, but didn’t really influence the match and made a few clumsy tackles.

Rob Holding (RCB) – 6/10 – Was controlled in his work at the back, while he also carried the ball forward well when in possession.

Gabriel (CB) – 8/10 – Started slowly, but grew into the contest and looked very assured later in the game. He came to the club with a reputation as being strong in the air, and he showed this with his goal. It wasn’t the perfect header, but it was his presence that put defenders off.

Kieran Tierney (LCB) – 7/10 – Another strong performance from Tierney at left centre-back. Like Holding, he was comfortable both with and without the ball.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles (LWB) – 7/10 – Playing in the left wing-back role, Maitland-Niles repaid the faith shown in him by his manager. Made a number of intelligent runs to create space and pose a threat.

Mohamed Elneny, Mikel Arteta
Mohamed Elneny is still a Premier League player, yes | Pool/Getty Images

Mohamed Elneny (CM) – 6/10 – Hardly a scintillating display, but Elneny controlled play well in the middle of the park.

Granit Xhaka (CM) – 7/10 – Dictated play, spraying passes around and bringing the forwards into the game, Xhaka was an imposing figure in midfield and picked up clever pockets of space.

Willian (RW) – 8/10 – Outstanding. The Brazilian was a constant threat, drifting around the pitch and linking play expertly with those around him. Two assists on his league debut will definitely please Gunners fans.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (LW) – 7/10 – What else can you say about this man? Aubameyang was quite for large parts of the contest, but still popped up to score a stunning goal.

Alexandre Lacazette (ST) – 7/10 Worked hard throughout and got himself his goal early on. Didn’t do his chances of staying in the starting lineup any harm.
