Manchester United trio early injury doubts for Liverpool trip

Manchester United have been handed a triple injury headache ahead of their top of the table clash against Liverpool on Sunday.

The Red Devils moved to the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Burnley on Tuesday night, thanks to a Paul Pogba volley in the second half.

Striker Anthony Martial missed a big chance at the end to put the game beyond doubt before clutching his hamstring. The Frenchman hobbled off the field to be replaced by defender Axel Tuanzebe. Moments later, Nemanja Matic went down on the pitch holding his groin and looked in some discomfort, although he was able to see out the final minutes of the match.

As relayed by Manchester Evening News, it’s believed all three men are initial doubts for the game at Anfield, which could see United move six points clear of the Reds with a win.

Eric Bailly would be the natural replacement for Lindelof to continue his good form alongside captain Harry Maguire, while Solskjaer has tended to opt for the energy and mobility of Scott McTominay and Fred for big games in the past.

But with the absence of Martial, United could have more of a problem. Edinson Cavani is yet to score in the Premier League as a starter, while Mason Greenwood has been off the boil for the majority of the season. This could lead to a change of system for the league leaders, with Marcus Rashford moving up front in a two, with an extra defender being used in the starting lineup.

Liverpool have their own injury problems ahead of the game, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ruled out and Joel Matip also struggling for fitness.
