Improved West Ham Can Be Dark Horses for European Qualification

Coming off a brilliant run of results throughout Project Restart to keep themselves in the Premier League, nobody quite knew what to expect from West Ham when the 2020/21 season kicked off in September.

After losing their opening two league games of the new campaign, it looked like the Hammers might be set for another relegation scrap. However, they have responded in impressive style, losing just once in their next eight matches to move within a point of the top four.

So, how has David Moyes managed to turn things around in the East End?

West Ham ended last season with a wretched defensive record, conceding 62 goals as they escaped the drop by five points. So far, they have conceded just 11 times in ten matches. If they were to keep that up until the end of the campaign, they would let in 42 goals. Such a drastic drop in the average number of goals against West Ham shows Moyes has improved them defensively.

The arrival of Czech full back Vladimir Coufal has facilitated a switch to three at the back. With the 28-year-old at right wing back, a solid partnership has developed between central defenders Fabian Balbuena, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell.

West Ham’s improvement as a defensive unit is also down to the re-emergence of Arthur Masuaku, who looks settled again after starting nine successive games after managing just 17 appearances last term.

In the middle of the park, Declan Rice ranks in the top ten amongst Premier League midfielders for tackles and interceptions. The youngster snuffs out opposition attacks like a man grinding a cigarette into the ground – plenty of force but maintaining the air of someone who has done it countless times before.

The decision to sign Tomas Soucek, the man Jose Mourinho compared to Marouane Fellaini, looks an inspired one. His tireless energy while running box-to-box has helped the Hammers hugely in their transitional play, while his 6’4 frame always presents an extra aerial threat from set pieces.

Further forward, West Ham have not set the league alight with their attack. But they haven’t really had to do, because like Moyes’ Everton side in the late 2000s, each member of the team does their job responsibly and efficiently, so that the Hammers rarely have to drag themselves back into games.

On the one occasion where they reverted to their old habits for the first 20 minutes against Spurs, the squad had enough bottle and belief to dig deep and snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat in one of the most remarkable finishes to a Premier League game there has ever been.

Crucially, Moyes didn’t dwell on that result because he knew his side were second best for the majority of that contest. The Scot understood that for West Ham to win games consistently, they had to draw first blood. Credit must go to his players, who have allowed him to execute game plans centred on discipline and determination by fully committing to the cause.

Indeed, West Ham have led in every one their five games since they trailed 3-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, beating Fulham, Sheffield United and Aston Villa. They can also consider themselves unlucky to have picked up a solitary point from two matches against Manchester City and Liverpool, twice opening the scoring.

Whether West Ham can maintain a sustained challenge for European football remains to be seen, as just over a quarter of the season has been completed as we enter December. The table is ridiculously congested too, with only four points separating the fifth placed Irons from Crystal Palace in 15th.

Although it is a topsy-turvy season that has been very difficult to predict, one thing is for certain. If West Ham are able to consistently grind out wins when other top teams have been remarkably unpredictable, they will be in the mix for European qualification come the end of May.

Toni Kroos Admits Real Madrid Are ‘Messed Up’ After Shock Shakhtar Defeat

Toni Kroos has conceded that Real Madrid are ‘all messed up’ after losing 2-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night in the Champions League, blowing their group wide open.

Anything but a defeat would have ensured Los Blancos’ progress through to the knockout stages, but their second loss of the round to Shakhtar has left them rueing a missed opportunity and means all four sides in Group B can still qualify.

Having lost to Alavés at the weekend, the defeat to the Ukrainians was confirmation of Real’s struggles this season. Speaking to Goal after the game, Kroos said: “It’s all messed up, this season we are struggling to score goals.

“It’s not a physical issue. I’m fine but when you lose its all negative. We have to keep working and try to win the last game.

“If you are on a winning run you’ve obviously got more confidence than if you’re losing – that’s normal. As a team you feel better when you win, but we have to win again; continue working.”

Currently sitting fourth in La Liga, seven points off top spot with a game in hand, it has certainly not been an easy start to the campaign for Zinedine Zidane and his Real Madrid team, and it is looking unlikely to be a repeat of previous seasons where the Champions League has offered respite from domestic troubles.

However, Luka Modrić was also keen to highlight his team’s eagerness to ensure they qualified for the knockout stages. “There’s still a game to go, we’ll see what happens in Inter’s match and see what we have to do in the last game,” he said.

Inter beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-2 in the other game, meaning that Real Madrid are likely to need to beat leaders Gladbach in the final game in order to qualify, although a draw could also prove enough if the other result in the group goes their way.

Modrić continued: “Madrid have shown that when we need to win, we can do it, but we have to show it on the pitch because words aren’t enough.”

The Arsenal Lineup That Should Start Against Rapid Wien

Arsenal can secure the title of Group B champions in the Europa League on Thursday night by avoiding defeat to Rapid Wien when they host the Austrian side at the Emirates.

Should the Gunners avoid defeat, they would claim top spot with a game to spare. Meanwhile, Wien require a win to keep the pressure on fellow knockout stage hopefuls Molde, with whom they are level on points.

The fixture comes as a good test for Mikel Arteta’s side before the north London derby on Sunday. Facing a team with all to play for will no doubt be a good warm up for Arsenal, while something else to enjoy will be the greatly anticipated return of supporters. An attendance of 2,000 fans will watch events unfold on Thursday night.

Here’s how we at 90min think Arsenal should look for the clash.

Runar Alex Runarsson (GK) – The Iceland international has kept two clean sheets in two appearances for the Gunners, both coming in the Europa League.

Cedric Soares (RB) – Arteta is expected to rest Hector Bellerin ahead of their crucial Premier League game with Tottenham, which could see Cedric come into the side.

Gabriel (CB) – The summer signing has been an ever present in the league since his arrival and has been one of Arsenal’s top performers. He’s expected to start on Thursday night.

Shkodran Mustafi (CB) – The German has featured in the last three Europa League ties, helping his side keep clean sheets in two of those games, and looks set to start again on Thursday.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles (LB) – The England international has also started the last three in the Europa League and, as Arteta will likely rest Kieran Tierney, looks set to make it four.

Nicolas Pepe (RM) – After his disappointing sending off against Leeds, the Ivorian had a great game against Molde last time out in the Europa League, making him the favourite to start on the right.

Joe Willock (CM) – Has had a great Europa League campaign so far, scoring twice in four games, and looks set to feature once more for the Gunners.

Granit Xhaka (CM) – As Thomas Partey remains out of contention with a thigh injury, Xhaka will likely feature as the defensive option in the centre of midfield.

Willian (LM) – The Brazilian has been a favourite of Arteta since his arrival in the summer and looks set to feature on Thursday night, offering creativity from the left flank.

Alexandre Lacazette (CF) – Having only been used as an 80th minute substitute in Arsenal’s Premier League loss to Wolves, the Frenchman looks likely to start on Thursday night just behind the main striker.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (ST) – Arsenal’s main man has had a season to forget so far, but he looks likely to start against Wien and will be looking to get back among the goals.

Liverpool’s Most Impressive Champions League Wins Under Jurgen Klopp – Ranked

Last season’s round of 16 defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid aside, Liverpool’s record in the Champions League under Jurgen Klopp has been pretty spectacular.

The German has guided the Reds to two finals and picked up some truly incredible results. Dramatic comebacks, merciless thrashings and last minute winners, Klopp’s reign has had it all – but which of his side’s great European nights should be remembered most fondly?

Here are 10 of the very best that will have fans fawning for many years to come…

Several weeks after putting Maribor to the sword 7-0, the Reds were again in a rampant mood against Spartak Moscow.

The scoreline doesn’t tell the full story of this game however. Sure, Liverpool were leaps and bounds ahead of their opponents but Spartak did not go down without a fight, forcing Loris Karius into five saves.

The Reds’ star man was Philippe Coutinho, who helped himself to a hat trick, while Sadio Mane also grabbed a brace. Roberto Firmino was the other scorer on a memorable night at Anfield.

As you may remember Klopp mentioning once or twice, Liverpool hosted Ajax recently in the midst of a pretty bad injury crisis.

Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara, Alisson, Joe Gomez and several other all missed out with the Dutch champions smelling blood.

In the end, Erik ten Hag’s side would depart Merseyside empty handed thanks to the heroics of several Liverpool academy graduates. Neco Williams and Curtis Jones combined brilliantly for the game’s only goal, while Caoimhin Kelleher made a couple of stunning stops to keep Ajax at bay.

It wasn’t quite the underdog story that Klopp tried to tell after the game, but it was an impressive result nonetheless.

Say what you want about Roma’s ridiculously stupid high line, Liverpool’s semi final win over I Giallorossi in 2018 will still live long in the memory.

If Klopp’s players were feeling nervous about being one win away from the final, they didn’t show it, playing with a freedom that their opponents could not deal with.

Mohamed Salah in particular was unplayable against his former club, netting twice and assisting Mane, while Firmino helped himself to two goals and two assists.

Liverpool were favourites heading into the 2019 Champions League final against Tottenham.

Despite this, many big teams have wilted under the lights on the biggest stage, making the Reds straightforward 2-0 win rather impressive.

The game got off a dramatic start when Moussa Sissoko was penalised for a dubious handball call in the box inside 30 seconds. Salah gleefully converted the resultant penalty.

Then, with just a few minutes to play, Divock Origi – never one to shy away from the big occasion – started the victory celebrations with a fine finish.

Liverpool’s trip to Bergamo to take on Atalanta was tipped to be one of the most exciting, free flowing games of the season and so it proved to be.

The only problem for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side was that all the goals were flowing in one direction. Diogo Jota had a particularly impressive game, playing Roberto Firmino’s false nine role expertly and bagging a fine hat trick.

Salah and Mane both scored as well, as Liverpool made a huge statement of intent to the rest of Europe.

Played in front of a rampant Anfield crowd, Liverpool’s meeting with Paris-Saint Germain back in the 2018/19 group stages was a stone cold classic.

Daniel Sturridge – making his first Champions League start in six years – headed the Reds 1-0 up early on, before James Milner doubled their advantage from the penalty spot.

Then came the PSG fightback with Thomas Meunier netting just before half time. Les Parisiens’ equaliser came from a far more likely source, Kylian Mbappe, who smashed home to level things up with eight minutes to play.

That would have been all she wrote, if not for a piece of last gasp magic from substitute Roberto Firmino. Twisting and turning inside the box he finally found enough space for a shot which Alphonso Areola could not prevent from nestling in the bottom corner.

In order to progress to the quarter finals in 2019, Liverpool faced the unenviable task of getting a result at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich.

After losing captain Jordan Henderson 12 minutes in through injury, many fans were fearing the worse. Mane soon put these nerves at ease with a truly incredible goal. Seriously. If you don’t remember it, stop and watch it now.

Even a Joel Matip own goal could not knock Klopp’s charges off course, with Virgil van Dijk and then Mane again scoring in the second half to secure a fantastic away result.

Few gave Liverpool a chance of progressing against Manchester City in the 2018 quarter finals.

At the time, Pep Guardiola’s side were well in the way to recording a Premier League record 100 points and they had already beaten the Reds 5-0 earlier in the season.

Roared on by a capacity crowd, Klopp’s side laughed in the face of these long odds, securing a famous 3-0 victory thanks to first half goals from Salah and Mane as well as a stunner from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain,

First legs do not come more impressive that this.

And so Liverpool travelled to the Etihad Stadium for their quarter final second leg with a three goal advantage.

Even still, there was a feeling beforehand that City had more than enough to progress. This feeling was only strengthened when Gabriel Jesus got the Cityzens off to the perfect start, finishing Raheem Sterling’s cross with less than three minutes played.

After this setback, the Reds could have folded. Instead they stood firm, defending for their lives and even going on to win the game thanks to goal from Salah and Firmino.

It was the complete away performance.

Forget ‘Liverpool’s Most Impressive Champions Leagues Wins Under Jurgen Klopp’, this could be the most impressive win in the competition’s history.

3-0 down from the first leg, the Reds needed more than a miracle to progress into the final. Fortunately, miraculous European results are an Anfield speciality and Liverpool served up one of their best ever back in May 2019.

An early goal Divock Origi gave them hope and a passive Barcelona were left reeling when a two minute double salvo from Georginio Wijnaldum levelled things up on aggregate.

Then came the most iconic corner routine all of time. You know we’re talking about and we’re sure you can remember the roar of the crowd as Origi’s strike hit the back of the net to send his side through to the final.

Jose Mourinho Reveals Harry Kane Is Injury Doubt for North London Derby

Jose Mourinho has revealed Harry Kane is an injury doubt for the north London derby against Arsenal on Sunday, though he did add he believes the Tottenham striker will play.

Kane has been one of the Premier League’s best players so far this season, registering a division high of nine assists while scoring a further seven goals. His partnership with Son Heung-min has also been one of the stories of the campaign.

However, the England captain was not pictured in training on Wednesday morning and speculation over his fitness started to do the rounds on social media.

Speaking ahead of the Europa League fixture against LASK on Thursday, Mourinho revealed Kane, alongside Sergio Reguilon, Carlos Vinicius and Erik Lamela, is a doubt for Sunday’s fixture.

He said: “All injured. Lamela is an injury from three weeks, a month. I don’t believe he has a chance for the weekend. Harry, Vinicius and Sergio there is a chance for the weekend.”

Regarding Kane, Mourinho added: “I’m not going to tell you the nature of his injury. I think he has a good chance. I don’t want to lie, I don’t want to hide anything in relation to ‘is he going to play or no?’ I think he’s going to play. That’s my feeling, that he’s going to play.”

While that news may rock the Spurs fanbase, there is a better prognosis on centre back Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian picked up an adductor problem in the late stages of the 2-0 victory over Manchester City in late November and has been missing ever since.

Mourinho added: “Yeah, he has a chance [for the weekend]. Not for tomorrow [Thursday]. Joe played against Chelsea and it wasn’t an easy first match to play. Davinson will play tomorrow. We have our options if he cannot play and we will not cry if he can’t like against Chelsea.”
