New Chelsea boss Sarri plays down Hazard to Real Madrid transfer links

Maurizio Sarri has attempted to play down speculation linking Eden Hazard with a move to Real Madrid, insisting that he is looking forward to having fun working with the Belgian and hopes to make him a better player.

The Italian, who has replaced Antonio Conte as the Blues boss, was speaking at his official unveiling on Wednesday amid mounting speculation that Hazard could be on his way out.

The 27-year-old has been strongly linked with a switch to Real Madrid as a possible replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, while Barcelona are also apparently interested.

And while Sarri could offer no guarantees he would definitely stay put, he was keen to talk up the prospect of working with one of the top players in Europe.

“Hazard is a high level player and I think he is one of the top two or three European players,” he told reporters.

“I would like to have fun during the week with him, this would mean good results and being competitive at the end of the season. I hope I will manage to improve him, this is very difficult as he is at a high level.”

When asked how Hazard compares with one of his former players at Napoli, Dries Mertens, Sarri added: “Dries has improved with me but he started at a lower level. I hope Hazard will improve with me but it will be difficult.

“Two top players, I hope I will improve Hazard too, but this will be very difficult.”

Benitez reveals Spain asked him to take over during World Cup crisis

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has claimed he was in the running to take over as Spain coach for the World Cup.

The 2010 world champions’ plans were thrown into disarray when Julen Lopetegui was sensationally sacked on the eve of the tournament after it emerged he had agreed to succeed Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) subsequently handed the reins to sporting director Fernando Hierro on an interim basis, but the former defender could only guide them as far as the last 16, where they lost to hosts Russia on penalties.

Ex-Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has since been installed as head coach on a two-year contract, but it appears Benitez could have been given the opportunity to impress in the role.

“There was maybe a chance,” Benitez told reporters. “But I am still [at Newcastle] and I am happy to be here.

“There was a chance. There were rumours about that.”

Though the move did not come to fruition, the 58-year-old remains receptive to the idea of coaching his country at a World Cup.

“We will see. I still feel young, so I have plenty of time to do that,” he added.

“Spain, I think, are a very good team and they will be better in the future.”

Benitez guided Newcastle to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season, having secured promotion back to the top flight as Championship winners in 2016-17.

France prodigy Mbappe is an alien – Varane

France defender Raphael Varane has described Kylian Mbappe as “a young alien” after the Paris Saint-Germain forward helped to inspire Les Bleus to glory at the World Cup.

Mbappe won the FIFA Young Player award for his performances in Russia, where he scored four goals, including one in France’s 4-2 victory over Croatia in the final.

When asked about the experience of playing alongside Mbappe, Real Madrid defender Varane – who faced the 19-year-old in the Champions League last season – joked that the prodigious attacker was from another world.

“I have known some aliens,” Varane told L’Equipe. “I think this is the first time I have met a young alien.

“Normally I meet extraterrestrials when they are 25, 30 years old. At the World Cup, I met one under the age of 20.

“With him, everything goes faster. When I talk tactically with him before the matches, I do not have time to finish my sentences before he has already understood and assimilated what I’m saying.”

As well as giving him the chance to marvel at Mbappe, the World Cup allowed Varane the opportunity to make his own mark on football’s most famous competition.

The 25-year-old said his performances in the finals helped him to shake off criticism that has dogged him during his hugely successful career, namely suggestions he is “too nice”.

Raphael Varane France 2018

“Since I was seven years old, they say ‘he’s nice, he’s nice’. Yes, I’m nice, but that’s not all I am,” said the Lille-born centre-back.

“You cannot have the career I’m having, staying at Real Madrid for seven years, without character.

“Sometimes, I was asked to play like [Sergio] Ramos, to play like any other, to be more aggressive, to be more this, more that.

“I have my style of play; it has not done too badly until now. People have wanted me to change and it annoys me.

“Do we ask Ramos to be someone else? We take him as he is; take me as I am. I’m proud that, at this World Cup, I have – in quotation marks – ‘accepted myself as I am’.”
